hello im looking for a new smoker an wanted to know is this great for big meats like roast, pork butt shoulder, ribs for cooking span of 3-5 hours
Asked by: Nic
Yes, my husband smokes ribs, chicken, and pork butts on this quite often. Just make sure you keep an eye on it to know when flip and to take the different types of meats off as some will cook quicker than others. Also, try not to over crowd the meats too much so they will have room in the smoker to cook properly. As with anything you purchase, make sure you read the instructions thoroughly. Many people will give bad review on products due to the lack of knowledge of the product but if your read the instructions carefully, it will tell you exactly how to use the product in order to get it to function properly. Good luck and enjoy!!!

Can the DG01176BDL-D and/or the wide body version accommodate a a turkey? If yes, approximately how big of a turkey (in pounds)?
Asked by: Bill
This Vertical smokers has 6 removable trays that would accommodate any size Turkey you want. I would say u could do at least 2 20 - 30 lb turkeys. I love that smoker and cant wait to get to it this year.

This is a great smoker if you are willing to do a few simple modifications to it. First off this smoker will leak smoke from the seams and doors. Buy some high heat food grade silicone sealant and use it during assembly to attach the firebox and vent to the main body and to create gaskets around the doors. Second, buy a large stainless steel bowl, fill this with water and place on the lowest rack of the smoker while cooking. This will help maintain a consistent temperature, keep your food moist and prevent it from burning. Third, do not rely on the included thermometer. I personally bought a dual probe digital thermometer that allows me to track the temp of the smoker and the meat from my couch and alerts me when the smoker temp gets to high or low or when the meat is done. I have had this smoker for almost 6 years, use it at least twice a month and would definitely buy again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NO it did not. It came in a box... NO it did not. It came in a box with no instruction manual for assembly and no hardware such as nuts and bolts for assembly. I have now spent two hours on the phone trying to get these parts from the vendor through you and they still are not here. I am not happy at all with this experience and I would not buy this product again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from nice, but a lot of issues i ordered smoker online. when i got it, the temp gauge was broken and door was beat up. I called manufacturer and they said they would ship right out. Had to call again ,cause they didn't ship. Got new door and it was bent up too. so had to call again. finally got second door after 3 weeks. did have to seal between fire box and smoker. gap is too big where those two meet. it does work , but you have to do alot to it. would not recommend to anyone else. company needs better quality standards.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New fire box design seems to help keep temperature in desired range. I researched this and other smokers before buying. Most reviews said that the smoker leaked and didn't reach 225 degrees for cooking. I saw that someone suggested Red Devil hi-temp silicone sealant around fire box and cooking chamber door because of leaking on another review, so I ordered some and had it on hand when I got my smoker. When assembling the smoker, I noticed that the screw pattern between the fire box and cooking chamber left a couple of possible gaps, so I drilled two additional holes and installed 3/16" screws (5/8" long) with nuts to eliminate any possible leaks from gaps, and added a bead of Red Devil to the lip of the fire box that mates to the cooking chamber. I did NOT add any sealant to the fire box door or cooking chamber door. The fire box guts are very different from the promo pictures (I assume the pictures are the old version), and mine has a sliding ash pan below and a grate that held a 4" tall ventilated open coal box that installed in a track above. Air flow potential appears to be MUCH better than the old design. I installed two oven thermometers at high and low positions in the smoker to check temperature range, and did the "cure" burn to season the smoker and remove any possible taste from the sealant. I was able to hit 240 degrees in the upper 2/3 or so, with no problem and actually had to back the heat off (was using regular Kingsford charcoal). The lower 1/3 was about 20 degrees cooler than the top. The VERY top was actually cooler than six inches down. I did see smoke seeping from the smoker door all around, but since I was hitting 225, I wasn't worried about it. The door thermometer appears to be pretty accurate compared to the oven thermometers. The next day I tried my first batch of food. I didn't keep the charcoal bin filled enough, and temps dropped a bit which slowed my cooking. Getting back to temperature can take a while if you let the coals get too low). Overall, the shelves near the built-in thermometer seemed to be the hot spot, with some differences depending on the draft current. I found that stacking the charcoal a little bit higher on side next to where the air enters seems to keep the burn rate a little more even as the charcoal is consumed. The second time I used this smoker, I used Kingsord Competition briquets, which are supposed to burn hotter. I hit 275 degrees without trying when I first loaded the fire box while went to finish some food prep. While cooking this time, I discovered that a shallow water pan right over the fire box inlet on the bottom shelf will change the air flow pattern and spread out the heat, kind of like a more expensive reverse flow offset smoker. When the water evaporated I left the pan there to keep the heat flow the same. I kept the charcoal loaded, and it cooked like a champ. I found that opening the cooker door while adding charcoal to the fire box will stop the draft from sucking ash into the cooker. Load quickly and shut things up right away. A layer of foil in the bottom is also a good idea if you will be saucing up your food and expect a lot of dripping (there is a small drip pan underneath, but this will help with clean up). After a little tweaking, this smoker turned out to be a very good value. The six shelves are a little small (less than 20"x20" per shelf and a full rack of ribs will be too long without cutting), so I recommend a rib rack for your baby backs to double your capacity per shelf. I cooked 3 full racks of ribs (in halves on rib racks, split between the top 2 shelves), 3 chicken quarters and a rack of stuffed jalapenos on a lower shelf in one shot, and could have fit more in with a little planning (only using 4 shelves of the supplied 6, lots of holes to adjust). If you plan on packing a lot of food in at once and use the full vertical space, you may want to rotate food on higher and lower shelves mid-way through to prevent uneven cooking. So far, everything has been AMAZING. No cover available for this, but Brinkmann makes a cover for a similar smoker that looks promising, and I just ordered it. I will post a follow-up review if it fits.
