The P736 36 in. Plug-End Extension Spring is a Holmes spring replacement for 1-piece garage doors as well as for toy haulers using lift springs. Are the metal rods that run inside the spring suppose to be attached in some way to protect the spring from striking someone in the event it breaks?
We call the metal rods "safety containment rods" and there is no interaction needed with these. It is a closed steel loop that runs the length of the spring and extends with the springs as they extend. If the spring ever breaks, the spring coils will wrap themselves around the safety containment rods.

The "P" designation is for a plug-end garage door spring. The "C" designation is for a clip-end garage door spring. Generally, clip-end springs have greater weight capacity. Both require a "C-Hook" at each end for single spring installation. If you are installing springs in pairs on each side of the door, you will need "w-Hooks"(See pictures)
A P320 spring has a plug-end and does not come with a C-hook.
I see no difference in the springs for what we use them for, we have both types on the farm, if there is a difference it is not visual, be careful handling, and installing this type of heavy spring, ware safety glasses, and gloves, they will hurt you.
