Hi James, This is for one spring.
The "SL" in SL728 stands for a lock-end extension spring, indicating the type of end fitting on the spring. "P" designates springs designed for bolt-through installation, requiring additional hardware. "SLR" isn't a standard designation for garage door springs. If you can't find SL728, a P728 spring is often suggested as a replacement, but it requires different mounting hardware. You could also consider an SL730 spring which is 2 inches longer than the SL728, but ensure it's compatible with your door's weight and lift requirements. Consulting a garage door professional is recommended for proper spring selection and safe installation.
Sl have the j like hooks that catch bolt and clamp on . P you need to bolt tru therefore needing an additional piece of hardware to connect and lock to fram

Hi there, this E900 HARDWARE SL728 28 in. Lock-End Extension Spring (0.177 in. No. 7 Wire) is an online exclusive item as there is no listed store SKU. It can be shipped to you directly or if it is eligible, shipped to a Home Depot store: however, it is not available to purchase directly from a Home Depot store. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot!
The spring size is on the label that should be attached to the item.
I would look up the model # for info. The tag that says SL728 28 . Other than that I dont know!
To measure the length of the spring, measure the overall coil length. For this spring, it is 28 inches coil to coil. To measure the wire gauge, measure the length of 20 coils and divide that number by 20. For this spring, 20 coils will measure to about 3.54 inches. This number divided by 20 is 0.177 inches or #7 wire. Another way to identify the size of the spring is by reading the numbers of the spring. The first number, 7 indicates the wire size and the last two numbers, 28 indicates the length of the spring. The letters signify the type of spring end. This SL is a lock-end spring.
By the length of the coil in the relaxed position. The hooks don't count. The other factor is the weight of the door and the available tension in the spring. Be sure to get enough, but not too much. Missing by a lot in either direction will affect how the door operates. Too much tension and the door wants to hit you in the chin when you open it, too little means you have to get a jack to open it. There is a pretty forgiving "middle ground" measurement that isn't hard to hit. There are also (usually) some mechanical adjustments on the hinge to help get it right.
the 28 is 28 in long.
Yes it is because the c stand for the hook at the end.
yes I had all my 5 garage doors installed with SL728C about 15 years ago ,every once a while a spring will break and I would go to a local Homedepot and buy it there, but now they don't keep them in stock at the store so I had to order online.
They didn't know at the store either. However, P728 says it replaced SL728 springs. 728 L says it replaced 729 springs. Since I dont have 729, I'm going with 728
Yes a lot of doors use this type spring C means with a clip on the end
This is the SL728 - C.
They have interlocking wires running through them to prevent the spring from flying when it breaks.
It doesn't have or need a safety cable. It has interlocking safety links inside the spring that prevent a broken spring from coming loose or becoming a projectile.
Spoke to an installer and no the cables are not needed. If you look you will see two rods running down the center of the springs. That is for safety instead of cable. Hope this helps.
Yes, but I think all do anymore.
No, comes just as shown with both ends being the same. Easy to install. Works well.
1. Springs should be fully compressed when door is open, adjust as needed; 2. Waterproof door.
First, protect your door from the rain by painting it and keeping it closed when it doesn't need to be open. Then (when it's dry) balance the spring tension so it's easy to open and close. You can find instructions for this on YouTube. Don't change the spring type if they work well when the door is dry and balanced - you will likely create a bigger problem.
The old spring indicated it was an SL730 so I bought an SL730 through Home Depot online after looking for it at various stores.
