About This Product

The 42 in. Eastman Flexible Magnesium Anode Rod helps prolong the life of your water heater tank by attracting corrosion to Itself. The rod corrodes through electrolysis, a process that protects the steel walls of the water heater by attracting corrosion to a more noble metal. The anode rod is built with a carbon steel cable and 4-sections of magnesium links. It features a durable stainless steel 3/4 in. x 3 in. NPT nipple connection. Easy to install by attaching it to the top of the tank to keep it steady. The anode rod should be inspected every 2-years and replaced as needed.

  • Magnesium construction with flexible carbon steel cable and durable corrosion-resistant stainless steel nipple
  • Helps prevent the rotten egg smell of sulfur
  • 42 in. long with a diameter of 5/8 in.
  • Can be cut to fit your water heater
  • Installation is easy at the top of the water heater tank
  • 12 in. minimum clearance required for installation
  • Recommended to check the life of your anode rod every 2-years and replace as needed
  • Lead-free compliant
  • For use in residential water heater tanks

Q:Please comment if you have successfully used this on Bradford White water heaters that have their anode rod on the hot nipple. I dunno if this is designed to allow hot water to go out through it. Thanks!

Perfect replacement for my 7 years old Bradford
Perfect replacement for my 7 years old Bradford White Defender (Model No.: MI5036FBN). I had to choose this segmented anode because my water heater was installed in the attic with about 20 inches of clearance from the sloping roof. The plumber had to cut the original (long and corroded) anode while pulling it carefully out. My water heater is like new again.

Great way to extend the life of your water heater
This anode rod is a great way to extend the life of your water heater. The flexible design makes it easy to install even if you have a low ceiling. You should take note that if your water heater is old you may not be able to remove the old fitting in order to install this new anode rod. I would suggest that this we used on a newer heater that has had the fitting removed annually for inspection of the anode rod otherwise you may break your water heater.

              Heavy Duty
Eastman 42 in. Flexible Magnesium Anode Rod with 3 in. Nipple Fitting looks very heavy duty. The amount of magnesium is substantial. I am impressed with its build quality. The design is creative. My new water heater has a duct running over it and there is not 4ft of head room so this flexible rod solves that dilemma. The carbon steel cable running through the heart of the rod will not rust. It's hard to believe that this rod can disintegrate in as little as two years in some regions of the country because of the water's makeup. Good idea to keep an extra on hand.

Very well made, but lacks instructions.
I ordered this by mistake. I needed a hex-head anode rod and the first picture on the product page showed it was hex head. But after I ordered this I discovered it was the less common "nipple" type anode rod that installs in the same hole as the hot water outlet. This rod is a flexible magnesium rod. The flexible segments are each 9" long and the overall length is 45". The segments are joined by stainless steel cable. The "flexible" part is so it can be installed when there is low clearance above the water heater. The magnesium material works best in soft water areas. Be sure to check your hot water heater instructions to find out what kind of anode rod you have. I was disappointed that no instructions were included, since there are several things to be careful about. I'll summarize them here: 1. turn off the electricity or gas feeding the water heater 2. turn off the cold water supply 3. open a hot water tap to release pressure 4. drain a couple of gallons of water from the water heater. 5. Disconnect the hot water output line 6. Using a pipe wrench, unscrew the hot water outlet 7. if you have low clearance and the old anode rod isn't flexible and you may not be able to remove it without cutting it. Be careful not to let any parts of the old rod drop into the tank. 8. Check the length of the new rod. The bottom of the rod should not touch the bottom of the tank. Cut it shorter if necessary. 9. Use pipe sealant tape before installing the new rod. At least 4 wraps are recommended. 10. Tighten rod with the pipe wrench 11. Reinstall hot water supply line 12. Turn off the hot water tap that was opened in step 3. 13. Turn on cold water supply. 14. Turn on a hot water tap and let run until the air escapes the system. 15. Check for leaks around the anode rod. 16. Turn power/gas back on.

Great choice for an anode rod
Eastman 42 in. Anode Rod with 3 in. Nipple Fitting Having to replace your water heater is never an easy or inexpensive home repair, and it usually happens as an emergency following a water leak and big mess! The typical water heater lasts only 4-8 years. The lifespan is so low due to a lack of preventive maintenance. That maintenance has two key parts: flush the tank once a year, and check/replace the anode rods every 2 years. Flushing removes sediment that reduces efficiency, and the anode rods help to keep the tank itself from rusting out and causing leaks. Doing these tasks can easily double the life of your water heater. Be sure to buy the correct anode rods. Those made from aluminum work great with hard water, while magnesium is best for soft water situations. Adding zinc can reduce the smell of sulfur in your water. The Eastman anode rods are a great choice, as they are available in both magnesium and aluminum. They are also made in connected segments that allow easy installation and removal- something that comes in handy if you have low ceilings. Be sure to check your water heater to verify if you need a nipple fitting or hex-head model.

              Fit perfectly on Bradford White
Normally try to stay with manufacturers parts, but Bradford White doesn’t make a flexible type anode rod for my 16 year old model, and with only 15 inches of ceiling space this flexible model with the required hot water nipple fitting worked great. To remove the old one I was prepared to cut it in sections as pulling it out. But it had degraded to the point I could bend it when pulling out. Careful not to let it break and fall into tank.

I ended up getting a similar one from A because they had faster delivery. But it was a similar magnesium multi-segment one, which I needed for my application because I didn't have ~37" of headroom for a solid anode. The segments can be disconnected, which is good because I needed to remove the last one to fit in my tank. [I think the anode is supposed to hang in the tank, and not touch the bottom of it.] When I remove the new anode in a few years to inspect it, if one segment is particularly worn, I could install the extra segment in it's place. [Otherwise I ended paying for a segment I'll never use.] BTW the ~9 year old tank had it's anode rod COMPLETELY eaten away. [It wasn't my water heater; I was servicing someone else's.] I'll be curious to see if there's similar wear in the future.

                Perfect Fit
This Anode Rod is fantastic and very well made! Its construction makes it perfect for those water heaters that don't have a lot of room above the heater. You can't beat the price either!
