About This Product

The Eastman flexible magnesium anode rod helps prolong the life of your water heater tank by attracting corrosion to itself. The rod corrodes through electrolysis, a process that protects the steel walls of the water heater by attracting corrosion to a more noble metal. The anode rod is built with a carbon steel cable and 4-sections of magnesium links. It is easy to install by attaching it to the top of the tank to keep it steady. The anode rod should be inspected periodically and replaced every 2-years. Anode rods are lead-free compliant for safe water drinking.

Q:AO Smith 40 gal gas water heater approximately 4 years old makes a snapping, popping sound. I was told it was the anode rod. Could it be something else.

A:  Mine was making the same kind of noises, "percolating" sounds. It was caused by a failed expansion tank. Easy to replace, about $50 for the replacement tank.

            by|Feb 8, 2023

A:  Anodes don’t make noise. Could be an internal leak hissing, or maybe the gas ignition system failing. But anodes don’t make noise. I checked with my former plumber spouse.

A:  It is recommended to contact a licensed plumber for your repair needs.

Replace Before Install If Possible!! Aluminum anode solved well water sulfer smell in both electric and gas water heater. Each heater (rheem) is less than 1 yr. old and purchased from HD. The stock sacrificial rods were terribly corroded away and stunk like rotten eggs. The flex replacement is nice for install, but doesn't help with removal of OEM rod. Here's how you do it: Unit off (control valve or breaker) Water off, drain and vent water heater (caution HOT WATER), 1 1/16 socket, impact or breaker bar, remove rod, cup of bleach in, fill, drain (no need to vent) ;) tape and dope threads, install, fill, unit on. The most difficult part is removing the stock rod and most likely having to cut it into 2 sections. No room for impact required a 3/4" drive extendable ratchet on one. Try to not let the shavings fall into your tank when cutting if you won't be filling and draining prior to replacement. Instantly noticeable upon completion. I did drain and fill multiple times prior to bitting the replacement bullet. Only grievance is there's no smaller size. I trimmed and discarded half on one rod to fit in a 36 gal low boy 220V electric water heater. Happy Wrenching!!

The Eastman Flexible Anode rod was perfect for my situation. I had low clearance above my water heater and the Eastman flexible links slid into the tank with ease. I was impressed with the quality of The stainless steel cable connecting the links.. The machined threaded pipe plug had a high quality fit and finish.
