I don't think that is how this works. It seems very thin once applied. It hardly turned the wall white even though it is white in the can. My understanding is that all the paint needs to be removed from the lead layer.

It has softeners and other fun chemicals that penetrate the lead paint and bond with it along with a bitter taste. Lead paint tastes sweet but this paint gives any chips that fall a bitter taste so it won't be consumed.

not being an expert, i would answer this in the way i would deal with it. first prepare your surface, as in use a scrapper to remove all flaky paint. then sand surface as in all area with sanding paper. brush area off with brush to remove dust. wipe with wet rag, allow ro dry. your surface is now ready for using your primer/paint lead cover paint.

will it bond to oil base paint

Asked by Jim January 11, 2018

Yes, but it needs at least two coats to seal.

Can this be painted over after applying as a primer?

yes, did. worked effectively using this method

Can you tint this product because it only comes in flat white

Asked by Mike December 4, 2017

Answers

Thank you for your question. It can be tinted to achieve light pastels only. One common reason for tinting is to allow for greater hiding when using as a primer. Don' forget while Ecobond, Lead Defender® is used for primer use on exterior jobs, can be used for both primer and finish coat for those interior applications. It's never a happy day to discover there's lead paint in the house. This is a great alternative to completely removing all the paint. However it's no fun this way either. Preparing to paint requires safety respirators, plastic drape, careful preparation and planning. It won't get done in one day. The paint itself is the one my city government lead abatement webpage information recommended. You have to order online. It is tintable. It does not apply well. It's very thick and a bit gritty. I used a brush for edges and a roller for the rest. Some areas have 2 coats, some have four coats. The paint smells bad and regardless of the statement it had low VOCs it set the smoke alarm off while drying. Smell lingered for 2 days but did finally go away. Compared to removing all the paint or replacing the woodwork this was easier but it was still no day at the park. However I feel better about being in my laundry room now and that's something.

I took the siding off a small enclosed back porch on our 1925 home and found a lovely little open porch with railings, all unfortunately covered in lead paint. I could not afford a lead abatement team. It was very stressful. I took off some of the more egregious peeling areas with liquid paint stripper. However, when it was not raining, it was sunny and windy, so the stripper would dry as I was working and the wind would blow the plastic like a sail, so that the semi-dry lead-infused goo made a mess. Finally, I found Ecobond to treat the rest. I am trusting that what came in a can (lead paint) can be solved with a can (Ecobond). I treated the whole porch, and am now preparing to paint and add some period molding. If any more paint peels while the next generation are on the porch or in the yard, I will not be a nervous wreck. It is now "The Peaceful Poet's Porch." Thank you, Ecobond! We are tentatively planning to take the old vinyl siding off the rest of the house and treat the whole thing with Ecobond! I only wish Ecobond was able to sell a product to consumers to treat the lead in the soil around our homes, which is the sad legacy of years of chipping paint.

The product is thicker than regular primer but it applied easily and provided even coverage. I will use it again. I had two garage doors and the peaked roof above them to be covered, and the one gallon can was more than enough. I probably have 3/8 of a can left.

I have applied the paint but haven't had my window lead tested again so cannot confirm that it solved the issue. When you receive the paint they mentioned that you must have it mixed mechanically (so ask home depot paint counter to mix it for you). Texture is similar to greek yogurt - not that hard to apply but definitely not as smooth as normal paint. Color is pure white.
