Questions & Answers

I just received my lawn mower. It mentions wearing protective glasses and a face shield. Is the face shield necessary?

Asked by: Kath
The short answer is no for the face shield. Always wear safety glasses when operating power equipment though at the very least.

Battery life

Battery life
Asked by: Mandy
I bought this mower this spring. The first mowing it lasted probably 40 minutes. Each time I mow it lasts less and less. Now, about 8-10 mowings into owning this mower and I feel lucky to get 20 minutes. I'm unimpressed. When the battery is charged it runs _great_. It is fairly quiet, easy to use, and cuts really well. Too bad the battery life is so poor so soon. :-(

Yes you can put in the mulching insert for mulch, to discharge the clippings to the right side of the lawnmower

It did not cut as well as my old gas lawn mower. I think this is due to it not creating as much as an updraft to pull the grass up as it cuts. Still, I was 90% happy with its performance. Not having to deal with gas and oil more than made up for the difference. I was able to mow my suburban lawn on a corner lot (a little more than average amount of grass) with a little battery power to spare. 14 months later, it wasn't able to finish my lawn before running out of charge, but it was close. A couple of week's later, it wasn't even close. I'd guess I lost 1/3 of its power capacity in less than a month. An equivalent replacement battery would cost $358. I could buy a new lawnmower for about $500-$550. If it would have lasted two seasons, it may have been worth it for me. a $550 dollar lawnmower that does its job for only 1.5 seasons with no option to exchange or refurbish the battery isn't a reasonable expense for me.

My gasoline lawnmower finally died last fall and I knew it would have to be replaced this spring. After some research on all available options out there I bit the bullet and went for the Ego 21" Self-propelled mower (made easier with a lower price @ HD). This weekend I finally did an initial mow of my 1/2 acre lawn (with wet grass) and can report that this is the easiest mower I have ever used. I can't get over how light it is. Love the variable speed control for the self-propelled part: I use fast on the one big area and then slow things down on the smaller areas. I never realized I needed this feature. In particular I love that I can lift it via its handle into the shed. And given that the unit is stored vertically, I can now sharpen the blades with my drill attachment after ever cut without having to drain the gas tank first. I'm never going back to gasoline after this. P.S. I also picked up the 10" pole saw and 15" weed trimmer. This is a well-designed system.

After less than a year the self propel feature stopped working along with the indication of the mower over heating in 68 degree weather. After being instructed by EGO support to take the mower to Home Depot for repair I was informed by HD the mower would be shipped to Atlanta for repair which takes anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. If I would have thought about repair issues before purchasing the EGO this would have been a probable show stopper. These mowers need to be designed so a DIY person can trouble shoot and possibly make repairs. Having to wait 8 weeks is ridiculous. If this is going to be the case, EGO should have in place a deal with HD to lend a mower at no charge to the customer for warranty issues. Renting a HD mower would run from $600 to $800. I will admit that we were pretty happy with the mower operation (therefore the 2 stars) and up until yesterday (4/10/18) would have recommended it as a 5 star buy. But any tool that can take two months to warranty repair is not worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love everything about it! I have used my Ego 21"Self Propelled mower 3 times now and I am very happy with it. The 7.5v battery mows my 7500 foot lot with power to spare. I only mulch, and it cuts the mixed coastal grasses/weeds cleanly. Motor speed increases when the blade hits thicker grass. I like the composite deck as there is less to rust in this salty environment. Due to my age and health issues, COPD and arthritis, I decided a self-propelled mower would be better for me and this one fits the bill. Initially, I was having hand pain holding the SP Lever, however, after lowering the mower's handle, I could use a different grip. Being able to just push a button to start instead of pulling a rope is wonderful! And walking behind the mower standing straight instead of bent over pushing is much easier for me. With the SP, I can drive right it right into the shed, easily collapse the handle, and store it upright. I love everything about it, including the cooling fan on the charger and the detailed manual!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than expected After waiting far too long to buy a mower after my last one quit, I decided to move away from gas and go battery. I have about 10K sq. ft. of lawn and some of it was nearly two feet tall. I expected it to be a disaster on the first mowing. Surprisingly it only took an extra battery charge to get the job done. It's so quiet you can use ear buds at a safe volume. No fumes. I've cut my lawn three times since then and each on a single charge. Even mowed down a couple of saplings without an overload. It did get caught on a piece of metal wire that caused an overload which only took a minute to clear. So far I am very happy with a couple of suggestions for improvement. When the self propel is released you should be able immediately pull it backward. I don'y like having to push it forward sometimes to get the wheels to release. Along the same lines you should be able to make turns with the drive engaged and not feel it hop. There should be a free wheeling clutch and not both wheels lock at the same RPM.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Juice to Spare! The EGO is well designed and built, fairly lightweight, maneuverable, easy to use and has plenty of juice (both battery and cutting power) to handle most applications (we have an acre lot that's about half lawn). The 7.5 amp battery charges in 60 minutes (or less, if it's not fully discharged) and gives over 60 minutes of runtime (cutting fescue) even when using the self-propelled feature. My wife and I couldn't be more pleased with this mower, and have been singing it's praises to our friends and family. We've had various gas mowers (Toro and Snapper and others) over the years, but now in retirement we really appreciate the virtually maintenance free aspects of the EGO. We would not have purchased this mower previously, but our recent experience with current battery technology in other lawn equipment (trimmer and blower) educated us to the fact that batteries have come a LONG way and can now perform on par with gasoline equipment... without the hassles of upkeep. Recommended without reservation!

My Zero turn 54" deck mower broke down and I have to wait 3 weeks for it to be repaired. I had purchased the EGO grass trimmer and hedge trimmer and found them excellent. I bought this mower to use while awaiting my zero turn mower. I have 2 acres to mow. I've cut the lawn two times so far and in 100 degree weather! This mower is great. the controls are well placed and easy to use such as turning off self propulsion when turning or mowing around flower beds. It mulches the grass much finer than my zero turn mower and cuts through taller grass with ease. The battery lasts about an hour and recharges in an hour. I have a 2.5AH battery from my other tools which I've also used to continue mowing. It lasts about 20 minutes. Of course there is a lot of walking when mowing 2 acres but with the self propulsion and speed adjustment I can adjust the pace. Powerful and quiet (I can mow in the early morning without disturbing my neighbors - my wife says she can't even hear it inside our house when I am mowing) and great ergonomic design!

You can't go as quickly as you can with a gas mower or it leaves uncut grass, but adjusting to that, it's fine. The light weight and lack of noise is a delight. Ego's customer service is a nightmare. June a year to the date I first started using this mower the blade ceased to spin. Customer service did return my calls or respond to e-mails until I posted negative review on its web site. After 4 weeks of waiting for repair, Ego gets involved- ish. They consider 4 weeks acceptable wait time for repair. The advice posted on their web site by users is to buy another mower at Home Depot and return it before 90 days. I bought a used mower. Customer service told me they had so many failures it was hard to keep up with repairs. At 6 weeks, they sent me a replacement tool. I wrote a letter to corporate headquarters a month ago; no response yet.
