We recommend installing the Shutter-Lok's by pre-drilling the holes (1/4 inch) and then tapping them in gently, with a hammer. Feel free to reach out to a Home Depot Representative about the proper installation screws, for your application. For functional hardware, there are lots of options but a few popular ones are: NR481BL, NR484BL, and NR254.

For our Lifetime Vinyl Shutters, we use 4 Shutter-Lok's for shutters up to 43 inches in height (each shutter) and 6 Shutter Lok's for 44 inches and greater in height (each shutter). The instructions I have that came with new shutters and use the same Shutter-Lok's Fasteners say to drill a 1/4" hole. That is what I did and they worked perfect.

If the product you currently have on your house is Lifetime Vinyl Shutters, then yes, you typically remove these by snapping them/breaking them. They would then need to be replaced.
