Can this carbide tipped scriber be used to score ceramic tile before snapping the tile with pliers?

Can this carbide tipped scriber be used to score ceramic tile before snapping the tile with pliers?
Asked by: Checkers
Technically you could use it for that purpose if you wanted. In a pinch I've scored tile, acrylic, thin wood and some softer metals using razor blades, hard knife blades at their points and even 16 penny nails. Their are tools specific to scoring materials such as tile or plastic/acrylics that in most cases make life easier if you are cutting a lot of them. In a pinch if I didn't have a tile cutter I'd use this over the knife, nail or razor blade but not on multiple tiles. A tungsten cutting wheel would be a great option for scoring tile. Tip: if you do end up using something like this scribe never have the tool pointing up and down. Always score at an angle like 45 degree as an example.

6 in. Carbide Tipped Scriber is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Attractive and useful Anyone who attempts to make precision metal parts uses a scriber to mark out layout lines. I have one that I picked up years ago at a garage sale, but it does a poor job on even mild steel, the tip is just not hard enough, and it does not even touch high speed steel lathe tools when I'm trying to mark them out prior to grinding. This scriber has a carbide tip that produces fine lines on the hardest steel and even on glass. As a bonus it looks like a high end pen, it would make an attractive birthday gift for a machinist.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Inexpensive 6" Scribe That Works..! This scribe has a very sharp carbide tip that marks whatever material you choose. It makes a very fine visible line in hardened steel, and any softer material. It works as advertised and is comfortable to hold and control while marking. This is a throwaway scribe with no replaceable parts, but it is very effective for a home tinkerer. It serves me well for my own little jobs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I have a carbide tipped scribe that from the picture this one looks the same. This carbide scribe isn't quite what the picture looks like. This one is a plain piece of hex bar stock with one end ground down to a point like a pencil. Add a pocket clip to it and that's what you got. It's heavy enough to be part carbide but the tip doesn't look like its carbide. Now if it is carbide there's only one thing that will sharpen it and that is a diamond impregnated wheel. From the picture it look's like the carbide scribe that I've used & had for about 30 years. Now my old one works like a click pen. My old one is getting really worn down and that's why I tried this one out. This one looks more like a carbide center punch than a scribe.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worthwhile scriber Pros: Still sharp after being heavily abused (used improperly as a center punch by co-worker, dropped 30ft on multiple occassions). Cons: Wish it came with a cover for the tip rather than a clip ( could've saved a lot of pockets)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent scribe Does not score on glass or mirrors. Metals and essentially Anything else though, this scribe will mark easily.
