This compass uses 2mm lead available in book/office stores. Buy a leadholder that uses the same size lead and includes a "pointer" (sharpener) and extra leads. HB hardness is similar to a #2 pencil

This was exactly the item I was looking for! It enabled me to lay a center line along the edges on pieces of work so I could drill and insert wooden dowels for blind joint assembly on the project.

(What's this)
This isn't as robust as many compasses I have used, but almost as nice as any I have used. It is easy to set an exact radius with the thumb screw. This isn't the compass to have knocking around your tool box for scribing cuts on a board. It is much more useful as a marking compass for actually drawing circles and arcs. The storage case would hold up fine is a toolbox drawer, but would break quickly in the bottom of a large compartment with tools on it. See the pictures for maximum (just over 3") and minimum (just under 3/16") radius allowed.

(What's this)
This Empire Precision Pencil Compass is actually fairly sturdy. There are no plastic parts and it has an easy thumbwheel size adjustment. The pencil lead and centering scribe are also secured with tiny thumbwheels. It will draw a circle up to 6 1/4" very comfortably with the pencil lead and the centering scribe well seated in the frame. It will reach to 7 1/4" with the pencil lead and centering scribe fully extended, though that makes the whole unit feel a little fragile and I’d worry about breaking off the pencil lead at that full extension. The Compass comes with a hard plastic case with an attached swivel loop on the back for hanging, and the case also has a slot for an included tiny plastic tube containing two extra pencil leads.

Hard to rate this compass. In one way it is precise, but not very sturdy. I consider it useful as an entry level drafting tool. Not very appropriate for a wood shop.
