This is the first 48 in. level that I have ever owned and I am really happy with it. I tested it for accuracy and it was right on. I find the magnetic strip on the side to be extremely helpful when leveling appliances. I can just put the level on the side of the appliance, make an adjustment, and then quickly check my work without having to handle the level after each adjustment. I also use it as a guide when making long cuts with my circular saw and also for a guide for my router. I know because of the I-Beam construction it will not flex like some edge guides that I have used.

I only had a simple plastic 48 inch level without magnetic edge for my home use. I received this model and when laying them side-by-side, there is no comparison with weight, durability and imagined long term usability. The aluminum frame is by far superior from the start and the finish is well thought out by adding plastic bumpers on the ends for protection. As you can see the magnetic surface hold very well vertically on my refrigerator..

This level worked well for my needs, one side is magnetic, great for one person operations working with steel studs. I used this for various task, one of which was resawing some spare 2 x 10s that I had. I did not need them 10" inches long. Instead I was building a workbench and cut them down to the size of 2x4's. I used this level in conjunction with a laser level and a combination square to mark my lines and I cut it with my tracksaw. Having a large level worked great as my work piece was 8' long. I was able to produce a straight , accurate line every time so I am happy. The vials were easily visible so I had no problem ensuring that the workpiece was square and level. I have large hands and I was able to grip it without issues using the openings. The magnetic side had no problem latching to steel when I needed it to. No matter what I find it easier to just keep the magnetic side down towards the work piece, wood or metal, to reduce the chance of it catching something incidentally. I am currently using it while I frame a house

The 48-inch 500 Series I-Beam Aluminum Magnetic Level is something I have needed and wanted for some time. With its 4-foot length, it’s a much better way to make sure a stud or top is dead on level, and this level’s accuracy is rated at .0005 inch in all working positions. This all metal I-Beam frame construction level is equipped with impact resistant end caps to prevent damage. A magnetic strip running along the length of the level makes for an easy way to use the level upright on steel studs, iron pipes and metal door frames etc. This level comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

This is decent level that seems to be fairly accurate, I would have liked it to have had a 45 degree level as well as the horizontal and vertical levels. There is a slot in the top for easy viewing of the horizontal level which is nice, and the hand holds that are built in are also handy. The vials are clear and the bubbles are easy to read. The magnet on the one side of the level is quite strong and it only takes about 16" of metal to support the entire weight of the level. I did notice that there is a fair amount of flex in the "I" beam and if you support the level on opposing corners while it is laying flat (wide side up) the levels at each end read differently indicating a fair amount of flex or twist. I didn't notice any problems when the level was standing up on the thin side. For most people the amount of flex would not be a problem, but if you are working on some exacting projects you would probably want to find a stiffer level. The level is about 1" wide, 2.25" tall and 78' long and weighs just under 4 pounds. All in all a decent level for you average person.

This MADE IN USA Empire 78 inch Magnetic I-Beam Level is very accurate. I set it horizontally on my bench with my Empire 48 in.I-Beam level (previously checked for accuracy) on top of it. Both bubbles look to be exactly the same. The vertical bubbles also proved to be very accurate, though I couldn’t get pics of that. As an old pipefitter, I can’t stand it when things are not square and plumb! As a homeowner and DIY’er, I still like things that way, and this level will make some jobs much easier. Sometimes a shorter level just isn’t quite enough for the best work. When I hung new doors in the bed/bathrooms, I did not use pre-hung, but assembled them with stain-grade wood. Those jambs were installed to align with the walls. The level I used at that time was a quite old, pretty beat up 4 ft. mason’s level, and not true. Unfortunately, the walls in this house are not square and plumb. So, one of the doors has never wanted to stay open. I just used this new 78 inch level to check that jamb again and confirmed it to be out of plumb in 2 directions. Our house is cooled with evaporative cooling which causes wood doors and jambs to swell in the summer. One of those doors tends to stick in a couple of spots. This level also makes a great long straight edge and shows where that jamb has some high spots that need adjusting. It will also be great for framing and other construction work. The full length magnet for use with steel framing, pipe, etc. is a great feature with this level. Out of curiosity, I stuck it on the side of our upright freezer. That freezer can definitely be adjusted some. This is a high quality level.

I recently received the Empire 24" magnetic level. It has three level vials and is well made with an aluminum frame. The vials do not seem to be made of glass, although they may be. They sit in a plastic housing. Historically, level vials were set in a glazing-type compound at the factory to hold their adjustment. I suppose modern manufacturing has gotten to the point that the bubbles and housing can be formed to within the tolerance required for the level length. To test a level, lay it on a fairly level surface and note the relative position of the bubble. Note the how close it is to the nearest marking. Turn the level 180 degrees and the bubble should remain the same distance off the marking. I checked this out in both the horizontal and vertical planes and found it to be true. The magnetic strip is made of that rubber polymer that they make magnetic sign out of. I had my doubts as to the holding power but tested it on several items. It had no trouble adhering to a metal file cabinet in any direction. Likewise, with a steel girder. To test its limit of hold, I attached it to a metal knee wall and slid it up until only about 25% of the magnetic strip was holding (see photo). It held well and could hold onto a metal surface with perhaps even less. If you are setting a lally column or jack post, this will work very well. At the cost of this level, you may want to get two, so that you can plumb the column without moving the level constantly. Overall a nice built, well-functioning level. As with all levels, do the above bubble check before doing anything critical.

I am impressed with this 4 foot level. It is made of cast aluminum and is very well made. It is strong and twist free. The level and plumb vials are all accurate. The plastic inserts protect it and the finishes you are working on from markings. One side has a magnetic stip, which helps hold the level when working with metal. It is also for hanging or storing this 48 inch level.

If you are using metal studs or leveling appliances, this is a wonderful addition to your toolbox. There is a magnetic strip that runs the full length of one side (see photos below) so the level sticks to the metal allowing you to make adjustments and watch the level at the same time rather than having to adjust then recheck over and over. I have other Empire tools that have held up well so I expect this Empire level to do the same.

*A solid level at a good price* Everyone should own a good level and in my experiences I find that I get the most use out of a 2 footer. Sure the torpedo gets plenty of use and I still don’t want to be without a 4 foot model yet in general I am usually grabbing for this size when I need to check the correctness of something. Build quality of this model is just as fine as any other Empire I have ever used, which is to say that it’s excellent all around. The entirety of it is made up of some durable aluminum with thick plastic bumpers on each end. The vials are well protected and housed in thick plastic windows. Plenty durable to withstand multiple drops. The attached magnet is plenty strong enough to hold onto whatever it is you are checking and I found that it kept its hold even during movement, such as on a door. Weighing in at just under 1.25 pounds it’s very lightweight. This level performed great as far as accuracy is concerned. All 3 vials showed no visible discrepancies when compared to a more expensive model. I feel it’s safe to say the tool meets or exceeds its printed accuracy. Visibility is fine and there is nothing to complain about other than the fact I’d prefer just about any color other than golden yellow for the liquid. I like to use my levels as a quick straight edge and it’s for that reason I usually prefer an I-beam as opposed to a box. For that purpose this model works well. I wouldn't trust it for anything more than rough layout yet I also wouldn’t expect much more than that. All in all I am more than pleased with this product. It does what it’s supposed to do and will no doubt last a very long time. Empire makes good tools and what you get here is a well priced level that performs great and is made in the USA. I especially appreciate when I can find a tool made in America and never mind spending a couple dollars more for that alone.
