Questions & Answers

What is the best fertilizer for Hydrangea??

Asked by: Mary
The best fertilizers for Hydrangea are a slow release fertilizer, which gradually releases nutrients to the plants, reducing potential for burn. Preparing the flower bed properly will also give you a large assistance with these plants.

Will they grow in direct sun (unshaded) areas as well?
Asked by: Lormking
They need some shade during the day, afternoon shade is best. I haven’t seen a hydrangea do well in sun all day, they usually get leaf scorch.

Any ideas on what’s causing black spotting on the leaves?

I planed a number of these along the side of my property about 2.5 months ago & they typically get sunlight from 7 am till noon/1 before the house casts a shadow on the area. I’ve noticed that on the leaves black areas have started to appear & some have burned out... I checked for insects & haven’t noticed any. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Asked by: CLEGarden
Foliage spotting can be caused by a number of fungal problems, and to a certain extent (late in the season autumn/fall) it will almost be impossible to avoid some foliage spotting before the plants go dormant. If you are experiencing foliar spotting we recommend using a fungicide that is formulated for hydrangeas. Also as a preventive measure try to water just the roots of the plants, avoiding getting excess water on the leaves. Excessive water on the leaves can make the problems worse.
