How long should they last powering a smoke detector? Mine don't seem to last more than 2 years.

How long should they last powering a smoke detector? Mine don't seem to last more than 2 years.
Asked by: Ed
Our smoke detectors are a/c wired and the batteries are backup. Ours lasted exactly 3 years to the month before needed to be replaced.

Can this battery be used in a smoke detector?

Asked by: horticultor51
Yes, lithium batteries can be used in smoke (and carbon monoxide) detectors... but be warned. According to Consumer Report, when lithium batteries die, they do so with little warning. The smoke detector will not chirp for very long as the battery nears the point of needing replacement. This is because lithium batteries hold their voltage higher for a longer period of time over their life. The voltage then drops quickly once their life wears out. This is different than with alkaline (and other) batteries, which more gradually decrease their voltage as they wear out. The smoke detector warns you of a low battery by starting to chirp when it detects the voltage starting to get low, and it does this for quite a while when alkaline batteries are used (days or weeks). But when a lithium battery is used, you may not be home when the smoke detector starts chirping (maybe you're away on vacation) and by time you get home it has stopped chirping because the battery voltage is now even too low to chirp. In which case, you have no smoke detector and you don't know it, putting you at risk. Bottom line is, if you use a lithium, you must remember to test your smoke detector more frequently and especially when you come home from being away for a few days. This risk is even greater for smoke detectors installed in rooms that are far away, where you may not hear the chirp for a while until you are in that part of the house (say, in a garage or basement that you may not frequently go into). Be safe.

What is the difference between Energizer Advanced Lithium and Ultimate Lithium 9 volt batteries?

Your web site says about exactly the same thing for the Advanced Lithium 9 volt and the ultimate lithium 9 volt, both 750 mah--yet you do not give actual voltage. rechargeable LiIon 9 volts are really about 8.2-8.7. What are these two? Which battery is newer technology? Even your prices are same. I just want to get t one that will last the longest while providing the full 9 volts, or 9.5 volts as a new Alkaline.
Asked by: mike
The 9 was inside a styrofoam faucet cover with a maroon plastic outer cover (also bought at Home Depot) so it may have stayed warmer than the exposed AA. It powered a once-per-second beeper beacon that was still beeping annoyingly loud when the payload was recovered about 4 hours later. No voltage readings were taken on the 9v.....but that sounds like a good idea for another experiment on the next flight! Hope Depot or Energizer, if your are interested in some batteries or other products being tested in the conditions of near space, I know an 11-year-old that would be glad to do it.

Is this a 2-pack like the description or a single battery like the picture?

Asked by: Joe
This is a 2-pack, which the picture shows for me. HD also sells them singly.
