Questions & Answers

what is the thread size?

Asked by: randy
Absolutely NOT 1/4...they are 3/16

What size hole do you drill and how deep.

Asked by: Lovebucks
Directions that come with glides states: Drill a centered 3/16" diameter starter Hole, then if soft wood, drill 23/64" diameter hole by 1-1/8" deep, but if hard wood, drill 3/8" diameter hole by 1-1/8" deep. A drill press with the wood clamped tightly to prevent any waggle could make some difference on the final diameter of the hole, BUT if using a standard spiral or paddle drill bit, I suggest you use no more than a 23/64" bit, or possibly even a 5/16" diameter drill bit. ***I used a 3/8" bit and had to make one wrap of Gorilla Tape as a bushing to wedge the plastic insert into the too large hole.*** Your best bet is to use CALIPERS on the plastic insert that goes into the hole you drilled to determine the best drill bit size, but don't include the ridges in your measurement that are supposed to bite into the wood.

1-1/16 in. Threaded Glide is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 10.

The package of T-nuts sold at Home Depot that works with these are the Everbilt 1/4 in-20 x 5/16 in. They fit the threads perfect and will most certainly be more secure. The reason I rated these a 3 and not a 5 is because you shouldn't have to buy another piece that is sold on a completely different aisle. If the company would have placed a weight limit on these and offered the t-nut alternative, I would have rated these a 5 no problem.

I was also hoping they would reduce drag across a hard floor. Unfortunately, the metal base is so cheap, the weight of sitting on the stool distorted the pad so that the stool is only riding on the base end of the bolt. Prone to scratch the floor and certainly no easier to slide the stool. Useless for anything other than a table or other light load, stationary application.

A few reviewers have complained about the threaded inserts and the plastic ones provided is done so I'm sure to make the sale more attractive to home users. Most threaded feet do not come with the inserts because the type used would depend on the install material and how tall the feet are. HomeDepot does sell a section of 1/4-20 threaded inserts in metal and brass in different heights. I use them often enough that I stock some in my shop and but the ones they sell look like mine in the pics. The feet themselves really are quite simple. The tricky part is installing the threaded insets straight. I use a drill press to make the holes then an allen key to thread the insert into the 3/8th hole. You need to really pay attention that the insert stays straight while you install. They have a tendency to wobble as you install. Depending on how you install onto the finished product that may not be as big a deal, I often install to block that can be adjusted. But if you're installing right into the finished product it's hard to correct the angle after the insert is threaded in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my Project I was refinishing an old dresser for my daughter and the base had gotten out of level. I ordered these furniture glides because I was using satin nickel drawer hardware and thought I would keep the same look throughout. One thing I would state right up front that this is a pack of FOUR glides. There's another product on here with the same description that states explicitly that it is a 4-pack. I couldn't "Buy online, pickup in store" that item, so I ordered four of these instead thinking I was buying them individually. Anyway, it was no hassle to simply return the unused three packages and I got the levelling furniture glides I needed to wrap up my project. I followed the instructions on the back of the package to install them using my dowel jig (3/8" pilot hole for the threaded stems which are included). The stems fit snuggly but easily into the pilot holes with only a slight bit of tapping from my dead-blow hammer to help them seat fully. I would have prefered metal stems, but the plastic ones seem to be thick and of fairly high quality, so I'm sure they'll do the job just fine.

I purchased 20 of these glides thinking they would be useful for my woodworking projects. Sadly, they do not work well. The lip on the plastic thread will snap if a load is placed on it. I had most of them snap when someone sits on a chair that has this type of glide.

The plastic nuts break, the outer lip snaps off when loaded by moderate weight (like a person sitting on the furniture. ) They might work better if replace the plastic nut with a metal nut (Tee not or insert nut.) I'll try that tomorrow. Appears to be standard 1/4" x 20 tpi threaded section.
