So HOME DEPOT, is this safe for use as a water line to my refrigerator? The answers provided seem...

The question is not answerable because there is no accepted definition of "safe." I have used it in my icemakers for years, but any material will accommodate bacteria if the conditions are right. Realize also, that the icemaker itself has this same problem, but I suspect no one has ever suggested that you periodically flood the icemaker plumbing with bleach, have they! If you want a risk-free world, realize that your mistake was living in this one. Enjoy your well-connected icemaker and send the lawyers on their way. Perhaps you can tell that I have a bit of an attitude about misuse of the word "safe."

To shape the tubing, heat it up in near-boiling water. It will become nearly straight and you can then set your desired shape in this condition. Cool the tubing in your new shape and all will be well.

Yes it uses standard 1/4" OD compression fittings--- the exact same as used on copper tubing. I just replaced an old 1/4" OD copper tubing to my swamp cooler with this tubing and it worked perfectly! I don't know about longevity vs copper but copper is so kinky...

Will this tubing work with barbed connections?

Asked by Jim October 15, 2017

I have used it with barbed connections, but vinyl tubing is better suited to mating with a barb. I would not try it with much pressure.

This filled the bill better than I had imagined it could!... That sounds over-the-top, so let me explain. You can use this tubing to create a disconnection point with same-size tubing of the same kind, or with clear vinyl tubing. The connection has a good enough seal to accomodate a slight vacuum like what you might need for siphoning (that is what I use it for). Here's how it works: Use a 1/4" wood dowel with a rounded end to expand a 1/2" length of the end of the tube. Heat the tubing with a lighter or small torch while inserting the dowel. Cool the expanded tubing (I use ice) before removing the dowel rod. The result is a tight fitting receptacle in the end of the tube into which you can insert another segment of this material or else clear vinyl tube of the same size. The polyethylene remains stiff enough to stay expanded (unless it is exposed to really high temperatures). Extraction force required is enough to prevent inadvertent disconnection and will even handle light pressure from the flow of water (perhaps it would be a problem with thicker stuff like oil--you're on your own to test that). Good luck with your application, but this is the stuff to use!
