I have installed on the door where children cannot reach, so that they won't open the door and walk away. with less than $3 you can make your house doors child proof/safety.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Problem solved I'm renovating a 100 + year old house. At some point in its long life someone removed the window pocket weights that allow the windows to stay open. Each window had two dowels, a long and a short, to hold the window open. They also removed the sash locks allowing anyone to open the ground floor windows from the outside. The windows are in good shape so I didn't want to replace them. I needed a cost effective solution. I installed these 2-1/2" barrel bolts at the left side bottom corner of the lower sash then drilled three small holes along the frame. One at the bottom to lock the window in the closed position, one half way up and one fully opened. A simple, inexpensive, solution that works like a charm.

I've had a pair of these barrel bolts rust out in about a year. If they are really made from stainless steel it must be the lowest grade possible.

I purchased 4 of these for a chicken coop construction project and ended up being disappointed with them. They are solid, and galvanized steel like they're supposed to be, but they're the first barrel bolts I've ever used that are loose and jiggly when closed. It's almost like the catch plates are opened up too much, allowing the sliding bar to jiggle around in there, which isn't great when you want it to hold a little door shut. While I am disappointed in these, and wouldn't recommend them, it was only for a chicken coop after all, so not the end of the world.
