Questions & Answers

I just replaced the wax ring on my toilet, but now whenever you sit on it, the toilet rocks because of the front bottom part of the toilet has lifted.

Asked by: Dave
Check that the bolts are tight, don't over tighten. If the toilet was secure before and started rocking then perhaps the bolts are loose or the flange is cracked. Some of the bolt cover caps snap on, some others screw on, remove and check the bolts. If the toilet was secure before and started rocking it is important to discover why, you don't want sewer gas leaking into your living space. Use shims to steady the toilet if no other problems exist. The toilet should be level side to side and front to back.

These are white/clear so they blend in a little better compared to the brown. These aren't too good if you just need a tiny shim(composite gives you a thin start). A chisel seems to be the best way to cut it, but be careful not to tap your toilet! Toilets can break very very easily with a hammer tap.

They work fine for leveling but they are quite hard to cut the excess off. Some I marked, removed, cut and reinstalled. Others I used a hacksaw blade to cut them off. Forget a utility knife I ruined a couple of blades before I gave up on that. The easiest way to cut them is to install, mark, remove, cut then reinstall. They are a poor design IMO.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fixed my rocking toilet Jammed two of these under the back side of the toilet. Use a small nylon faced hammer to tap these in to avoid breaking your toilet. Once you have them set use a small coping saw blade to cut the excess off. Like other reviewers using a razor knife was a no go

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Toilet Shim - Used a Chisel to Cut with Ease, Worked Great These shims worked great leveling my toilet. I have read that a lot of people have trouble cutting them, but I think they are using the wrong technique. I used a chisel and it only took three or four light taps with a hammer to make a clean cut that matches the contour of the bowl's base perfectly. Now you can't even tell a shim was used. Great product.

Long story short, my toilet is 1/4" to 1/2" off the floor. I have to shim all four sides and these shims helped with only two. Good thing I have some old plastic long shims and extra tile to use. The plastic is very hard, I recommend using a sharp chisel to cut them. However, I can just buy the longer plastic shims I used for cheaper which are easier to cut.

These shims were very hard to cut, but did work as a shim, so I cannot complain it didn't work. I would ask they embed the serrations deeper so you can crack/cut it to size easier.
