Questions & Answers

Are glass panels more clear than polycarbonate? Pros & cons of each

Asked by: Carolyn
Glass panels are totally clear, while "clear" twin-wall polycarbonate panels are opaque. However the thicker the polycarbonate panels the more "clear" they become. 10 mm is much more "clear" than 4 mm. It also very much depends on the quality of the polycarbonate in the first place - recycled is not as clear as virgin plastic. The major reasons for using poly instead of glass are: 1) Twin-wall poly (more than 6 mm thick - say 8 or 10 mm thick) is a MUCH better insulator not just against cold weather but especially against sudden hot days in the spring and summer seasons. Traditionally a "hobby" greenhouse was not expected or designed for use against hot weather - only to over winter plants and/or start seedlings while it is still cold outside. But, contrary to Europe most of the USA sit much lower and as such experiences major swings in weather even as early as February and when it gets suddenly 80º outside a glass greenhouse can burn up plants faster than cold weather freezes them. We have more complaints about greenhouses getting to hot in the spring season than about how to create extra heat. I general my recommendation is: glass is for people who are foremost concerned about the look of the greenhouse - while polycarbonate (8 mm or thicker) is best suited for serious gardeners who truly want to use the greenhouse for what it is designed to do: protect and/or grow plants (during the winter season). One extra benefit of poly is that if it is still too warm (i.e. very southern states of the USA) than it is easy to cut a hole in those panels and mount an exhaust fan (and an in-take shutter vent as well). Is there a load bearing rating for this? I live in Minnesota where we can get feet of snow, would this hold up to a snow cover?
Asked by: Mntrailer66
Yes, we do have a rating but when it comes to greenhouses it is subject to some common sense - by this I mean if you are not using your greenhouse during the winter and you would not be able to brush a couple of feet of snow of the roof we suggest putting a "2x4" in the center as a safety precaution. However, we also offer snow re-inforcement its for our Victorian greenhouses. Most important is to know that in 12 years of selling this line we have never had a unit collapse due to snow. Yes, it is available with 10 mm 5-wall "X-Strong" polycarbonate panels - but this model has not yet been uploaded to the HD.com website. Please call us directly to discuss: Exaco: 877-760-8500 ext 701 or 705.

I am interested in one of these. The product is heavy! Can anyone provide information as to the size of the packing boxes... How many boxes? dimensions? Weight? If I have one of these delivered to my local store, what type of vehicle will I need to take it home?
Asked by: FrankR
If you buy the glass unit ; the pallet is about 1,000 lbs. (40" x 48" x 90" high), with 2 boxes: 12" x 9" x 11 feet long - 100 lbs, and 12" x 9" x 9 feet long about 80 lbs. If you have a pickup truck or any other vehicle with at least 73" of space you can lay the glass sheets flat down and the rest of the parts on the pallet on top of the glass. The long boxes can be moved either sticking out the back or in/on a trailer - or small box truck (which you could rent from the Home Depot store.
