Gardenias grown in the north as patio plants set buds in the cool of winter and spring. I maintain mine in a 50-60d basement under lights.

Yes, it can be planted in the ground.

I have one for about 10yrs the leaves for the past two yrs have turn dark brown. What would be the cause of this problem.

Asked by Babyface March 9, 2018
1
Answer

Do you live in a dry area? Sometimes gardenia leaves will turn brown if they don't get enough water. It's also possible it's depleted all of its nutrients from the soil around it if it's 10 years old. If you haven't, you might try hitting it with some gardenia fertilizer. Also, putting an inch or two of compost around the perimeter of your shrub will help enrich the soil in the long-term as well.

I have poor drainage and need to know if this plant would grow well

Asked by Ro February 24, 2018

Answer

Gardenias are very susceptible to root rot, so poor drainage may be a problem. You might try them in a large container pot or raised garden bed.

Great Gardenia plant
This came in great shape. I ordered five. They will grow just as well as what you picked off nursery floor.

Arrived in Great Condition
Received and planted these this past weekend. The plants arrived in amazing green condition with lots of large buds that are already beginning to bloom 2 days after planting!! A few yellow leaves which I just pulled off before planting. Great quality plants.

Not healthy
At the first look the foliage is full and green. However taking a closer look there are yellow leaves with dark spots on them. These are signs of bacteria infection and I’m very disappointed. The plant is very well packaged but I hope they picked healthy plant for me.

Gardenia plant arrived full and green in a 2.5 gallon gallon pot wrapped inside plastic bag. Potting soil was excessively well drained. I repotted in a 10” pot with a few handfuls of peat mix added to additional Cactus and Succulent mix. A happy medium!
