Q:Can this planted in zone 9b?
by|Jul 2, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Emerald Green Arborvitae Thujas (Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd') are best suited for USDA hardiness zones 3 to 8. Zone 9b typically has a warm and mild climate, which may not be ideal for these trees, as they prefer cooler conditions. They might struggle with the higher temperatures and humidity in zone 9b. It's advisable to choose a tree species that is better adapted to the specific climate and conditions of your region.

Q:Can these be planted along the top of a retaining wall
    by|Apr 29, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Yes, Emerald Green Arborvitae can be planted along the top of a retaining wall. This can create an attractive and functional landscape design. Ensure that the retaining wall has proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, and plant the arborvitae with adequate spacing to accommodate their mature width, as they will grow into a dense hedge over time. Proper planting and care are essential to help them establish and thrive in this location.

A:  Emerald Green Arborvitaes are considered relatively fast-growing evergreen shrubs. In optimal conditions, they can put on about 5 to 10 inches of growth per year. The actual growth rate, however, can be influenced by various factors such as soil quality, water availability, sunlight, and overall care. Providing these arborvitaes with well-draining soil, regular watering, and adequate sunlight can help maximize their growth potential. Additionally, occasional pruning can encourage a denser and more compact form. While they may not be as fast-growing as some other hedge plants, their moderate growth rate, along with their narrow and upright habit, makes them popular choices for creating privacy screens and hedges in a relatively efficient timeframe.

            Tall healthy plants!
I ordered two Emerald green arborvitae online when I could not find them in my local nurseries. These trees were packed well and very healthy. I was surprised at how tall they are- 2.5 ft to 3 ft. I ordered these on 6/18 and received them on 6/21.

              4"-6" Growth After 1 Year
I live in Maryland (Hardiness Zone 6B). I purchased 58 Emerald Green Arborvitae (Thuja) trees in 2.5 gallon pots last summer. I rented the big towable auger and it only took me about 2 hours to dig those 58 holes. I kept them well-watered until winter and I haven't done anything since. After 11 months, I'm very happy to report that all 58 are doing very well and that most of them have at least 4"-6" inches of top growth on them. I'd recommend these to anyone.

                Had better luck elsewhere
I ordered five of these from HD and had to order another five from the Tree Center and the HD trees are not holding up nearly as well. The trees were all planted at the same time and taken care of in the same manner, but most of the HD trees are half dead by this spring. While HD does guarantee their plants for a year it would be annoying to replace them because I've not lost an entire growing season if I want to start over. In my photo the HD trees are on the left side.

All (18 yrees), but 1 are now dead!!!
We purchased and planted 18 trees last September. We had a fairly mild winter compared to some. We planted the trees correctly and watered whenever it was above freezing temperatures. EIGHTEEN trees and only 1 survived??? Very very bad odds. More than disappointed.

                    Very impressed
Just received 5 of these trees. As I opened each box, I was very impressed with the color and condition of each tree. I’m hopeful they’ll last and create a nice privacy screen in a few years so we don’t have to see the neighbor’s yard. One year warranty sold me. I got quotes from companies who wanted $120 per tree. I understand paying for labor but we’re talking about 3 ft trees here. Bought them for $35/each and will spend an afternoon planting and mulching.

The emerald greens I had delivered were a joke, they were the size of something that you would put on a coffee table! In store had been out for a few weeks do to the landscapers buying them all up. The day I returned them in store they had gotten a small shipment, and for $5 bucks a tree more I got some 30” nice ones. If your local store doesn’t have any, just keep checking, they’ll get some more in.
