Q:What is the sound level on these?
by|Jan 7, 2024

Answer This Question

A:  Fantech does not publish a decibel or sones sound rating for their fans. The fans themselves make very little sound and they I meant to be mounted remotely so they are not heard. However, it is not the fan that makes the sound, it is the movement of the air. The duct work creates a static press drop, basically friction as the air moves through it. It is this resistance that creates the sound. If you want to diminish or eliminate the sound you do that by either sizing the duct work correctly or oversizing it. The larger the duct size the greater the volume of air that can be moved at the lowest pressure. As a trades person I first became familiar with Fantech on a very high-end job early in my career. The homeowner wanted silent ventilation as their hearing was extremely sensitive. The architect did the research and came back with fintech remote fans. He had us use oversized smooth metal duct. In the end there was no friction so there was no sound. In fact, to prove to the homeowner that the ventilation system was running with had to place a piece of newspaper across the grill. When we let go and the suction held it there, he was convinced it was running. The point I am trying to make is that installation is the biggest determinant of sound. If the duct is undersized or has a rough interior with frequent sharp turns you will get sound.

Q:Fantech roof caps seem to come in a wide variety of sizes. How do I know which one I need?

A:  They have a chart on their website that match the square footage of the bathroom to the CFMs needed. It’s very simple to under stand.

A:  As your question is about a roof cap, yet the question emanates from a bathroom fan I am a little confused. Hopefully I understand the question and give you a satisfactory answer. Fantech offers roof caps from 4"-12" . The size measurement refers to the diameter of the duct that it will receive. The overall size of the roof cap will also increase as the duct size increases. The sizing of duct is a calculation based on the power of the fan. Fans are sized by CFM, Cubic Feet per minute. As an example this fan is 270 CFM. As a result the discharge is 6" in diameter. Normally I would then run 6" diameter duct from that to a 6" roof cap; or larger but never smaller. Why? If you reduce the duct size the air needs to speed up so the same volume can go through the smaller pipe. This will cause noise. Thus I always use ductwork that is the same size as the fan discharge or go up a size. This helps insure quiet operation. Typically fans and blowers don't make a lot of noise, yet the get the blame. Instead the noise is a result of air moving through improperly sized duct.

Q:1) Are the light and exhaust wired separately (can they be operated independently)? 2) Can the exhaust function be adjusted on a switch in the same way the light can be dimmed?

        Answer This Question

A:  These products get wired in the field. Thus the electrician could wire them such that they come on together or they could be wired independently. It is really up to the installer. The electrician could also wire the fan to a an appropriate rheostat rather than a simple switch so that the fan could be modulate up or down. When i installed these in my home I did exactly that. The fan and the two lights are all controlled independently. Ultimately I changed out the fan control to a timer because no one ever shut it off due to the fact they could not hear it.

A:  The Frantech offering is so large that it is not currently possible to list everything on the site. However everything they make including parts can be special ordered through a Home Depot store.

I give it 3 stars because of the issues of actually getting a 270 CFM fan in the kit. The first one came in a kit labeled “270 CFM”, but the fan motor was a “240CFM”. I sent the whole kit back and they sent another in a kit labeled “270 CFM” with a “260CFM” so after this, I gave in and installed this one. I give 5 stars for Fantech products otherwise.
