Questions & Answers

Plz tell me the sheath has belt loops? And has the sharpness issue been dealt with? lastly wat is the type of material?

Asked by: Grrr
there is a single belt loop on the sheath. However, I have found that because of the snap and Velcro closures (yes, there are two), that I find it easier not to "wear" it, but just carry it. I found it to be sharp enough for my needs, but after using it, I do hone it, to keep it sharp

How, or what can you use to sharpen this? I tested it straight out of the package on a branch to a bush near my front door and it took probably four or five hits to cut it. The branch was probably barely over 1/16" in diameter. I tried hitting it both with down and upper ward cuts too. It really broke it off just from hitting it so many times than actually clean cutting through it. I could have snapped the branch off by hand quicker.

I sharpen mine with a very fine file often because of hitting heavy roots and hidden rocks.. Don't expect it to cut through everything like butter. You may need to try some different whacking techniques before finding the right approach. I wouldn't have used it on the bush as you described. I probably would have used a lopper. You have to use the right tool at the right time..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tree Saver!! This is the best tool I've found to remove ivy from trees. I went to HD to buy the Fiskars machete to replace an old one and saw this crazy looking zombie killer next to it. I figured this might work better, so I bought this instead. As others have said, you will need to sharpen both the main cutting edge and the gut hook. A flat file and a small round file (for the gut hook) will work. No need for stones. These are working edges. Getting them razor sharp is unnecessary. It took me 5 minutes with the files I mentioned to get it sharp enough to go through Vines over 1 inch in diameter. The bottom part of the hatchet is perfect for pulling the vines away from the bark. Then just continue that pulling motion bringing the vine to the gut hook where it will cut the vine easily. The handle is also very comfortable and well designed. You can put your hand in multiple positions. At first glance, this looks more like a movie prop, but I've used it several times and it really works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camping/survival companion This looks like it came right out of a zombie movie or something. It does function very well, but has pro's and cons vs a typical hatchet. A pro is that it is more balanced for cutting less tough things like twigs, grass, etc. However if using it to chop something tougher like a small log (or especially a big log) because it is balanced it won't do as well. A hatchet is usually more front heavy, like a hammer. The curved part under the clever is good for cutting small twigs, a handful of brush, materials like tarp, rope, canvas, etc. Another plus is that because it doesn't have extra weight in the front, it is actually relatively light weight. Again, great for a trip where you carry everything on you (backpacking, survival, etc) Honestly I think the best thing about this is the look. Use it does have functionality, but again it looks perfect for a zombie movie or something. Either way, strongly recommend this for camping, and or if going on some survival trip or something like that.

It is too light and the steel is cheap. This is an item for stocking stuffing and keeping inside to look like an outdoorsman. For 5 years I have been felling pine trees and chopping and dropping the limbs in my plantation. A traditional Japanese gardening hatchet is a delight for that purpose, but when mine finally chipped after all that time I decided to try this because I was misled by the positive reviews. But, this is just silly, and it is not so cheap to simply forget about that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chop it! I used this hatchet to clear a large area of invasive, old growth Blackberry vines. The hatchet has a solid feel & the blade is very sharp, right out of the box. Heavy duty gloves, thick coat, eye & head protection was a must. I also used a machete on this job, but I found the hatchet especially useful at chopping through thick vines, when the vines were laying on the ground, or on a downed tree. The hook like blade curve was very useful cutting vines at sharp hairpin turns & where the vine branches out. The head of the blade is heavier than at the handle, providing greater leverage & follow through of a chop. The ergonomic handle is comfortable to hold over long periods of time. The end of the handle has a nice foot extension curve, that kept the hatchet solidly in my hand even after 4-hours of hard work. The included heavy duty sheath provides great protection & has a belt loop for carrying the tool with you. The sheath's security strap is not long enough to button snap it closed. This is a great product!
