Questions & Answers

Has anyone had an issue with the two poles coming spare when sawing a limb at the height limit?

Asked by: Karbuilder
For safety and confidence when handling or sawing, I always drill holes through outside and inside pole shaft at various intervals to place a bolt or nail to ensure that no matter what the height it is extended to, there is no chance that they come apart, and it stabilizes any movement while sawing.

What is the maximum size branch you really can cut. 1 1/8 seems very small for this unit.

Asked by: NorCal
I can say its good for at least 3" limbs, but not recommended of course.

PowerLever 1-1/8 in. Cut Capacity Steel Saw Blade 15 in. Fiberglass Pole 14 ft. Tree Pruner is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 658.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cuts quickly, cheaply made, worn hole on day one Purchased today and after brief use the inner extension sleeve hole is tearing out after 3 cuts. This will just lead to more slop and splitting of the tube. Too much epoxy and not enough glass in the inner sleeve. can't recommend at all. maybe Fiskars needs to get a better foreign manufacturers..

Cut Capacity Steel Blade Fiberglass Handled 12 ft. But when I compared it to the 14 foot 1-1/8 in it was much more robust. The handle is almost twice the size of the 12 ft. I cut many small branches with the PowerLever and two 4 inch branches and some smaller branches with the sawblade. The PowerLever cut took much less pulling power on the cord than I expected. The saw blade is very sturdy and sharp. It takes a little practice but once you get the angle and back stroke correct it cut through the limbs effortlessly. I read reviews where people complained about the wing nut coming loose prior to my purchase, so I tightened the wing nut with pliers and I had no issues with it coming loose. I also read complaints the blade was flimsy and dull. Not the case with this one, the blade did not bend it cuts on the back stroke and it is very sharp. If you have ever cut branches with a camping saw this blade is as or more sharp and cuts through limbs quickly. I recommend spending the extra few bucks and purchase the 14 foot over the 12 foot. I needed to cut and trim off dead limbs from my large ~50 year old Chinese Elm. Both cutting with the saw and pruning blade would be needed on branches from 4" to 1/2". I chose this unit based on brand name, service length, simplicity and price. The very first effort was to cut a 4" limb with the saw at ~12' reach. The teeth of the blade cut and hook into the limb as they should however now require significant pull force to generate the cutting. The problem is that the locking mechanism for the pole extension fails and slips and cutting is not achieved. There multiple locking positions (holes) on the inner fiberglass pole where a locking mechanism falls into for predetermined different lengths. Even with the secondary clasp lock, the poles separate when pulling the saw to cut. Upon examining the locking position holes, one can see the fiberglass broken away from around the hole where the locking mechanism broke free. This occurred with two minutes of my first use - within 30 minutes after purchase. I managed to finish the task and used the prune blade for the smaller cuts - which worked fine. I wish I had taken a photo for this review however I returned this poorly designed trimmer for refund the following day. If you need to cut with the saw, do not buy this unit.

It will only handle very small diameter branches which seems odd since it is much bulkier than another similar model made by Fiskars that can handle much larger branches. Even the small branches gave me problems. Also, operation of the extension function was difficult at best. Nothing smooth about it, it took some real work just to slide it out and then again to put it back to normal length. The hanging rope is always in the way and/or getting tangled in other branches. Stick with their other version that has the cut strap built into the shaft itself, it is a much better product. I returned this to the store a few hours after purchase.

Used for 10 hours and the the spring started to wear out, slow to snap back to open position. Works great for the cutting part but not made to last. The one I brought last year spring popped and had to buy a new one this year.
