Pro 2 in. Cut Capacity High Carbon Steel Blade, 28 in. Bypass Lopper with SoftGrip Handles

The good: I barely felt resistance from fresh privet between 1/2" and 1" thickness Really easy and smooth cutting with a tool that felt comfortable as well as indestructible. The Pro offers long, bright orange, anti-slip handles that feel great and the axe handle style fawn foot installs confidence. The shock absorber designs is a huge upgrade from other rubber absorbers as the Pro puts a metal case around the rubber distributing the force over the whole surface and protecting the rubber. The thickness of the hardened blade/ lever increased in thickness - from 7/32' to 9/32" - while the lever also increased in width adding additional strength. An improvement I immediately liked because I broke two Power Lever blades over the years. Using aluminium profile handles instead of simple oval handles adds stiffness and strength to the handles but I never had a Fiskars handle fail on me. It is a shame that Fiskars got almost everything right with the upgraded Pro version but failed to stick to the hook design of the jaws. Over the last 10 years I bought loppers from 6 different brands and because the Power Lever (1) from Fiskars is my favorite, I bought 4 different styles from Fiskars, always hoping to further improve the usability and sturdiness of the tool. When I saw that Fiskars introduced a Pro Lopper (2), which offers the Power Lever design, I simply had to buy the Pro version but ended up disappointed. The Pro is great for branches and stems between 1/2" and 1". - For cuts smaller than 1/2" I prefer a one-handed pruner and - to my disappointment - stems bigger than 1" are pushed out of the lower jaw. Pushing the stem towards the tip of the jaw adds a cutting motion that probably helps when cutting small diameter stems but also increases the distance between pivot point and stem thus shrinking my mechanical advantage. In contrast the jaw design of the Power Lever encloses the stem, locks it in place and even allows moving the lopper around the stem finding different cutting positions. All my professional grade bypass loppers feature the jaw design that pushes the stem out. As a homeowner who enjoys DIY yard work, I wanted to try Fiskars Pro line. While these loppers are twice the price of my other Fiskars loppers, they’re larger/longer, and more rugged. The manufacturer’s claim is the loppers can cut branches up to 2”, but it requires brute strength to do so in my opinion. These arrived nice and sharp and cut like butter on the small stuff, but it’s still the honeymoon period. It isn’t until the second season that I figure out if a tool’s worth the higher price. I’ve had issues with locking nuts coming loose on my old loppers after the first season, but this pro model incorporates locking nuts I haven’t used before. Regardless, I’ve had positive experiences with Fiskars honoring the lifetime warranty. In the past, if something has failed, they’ve sent me a new tool. Overall, I’m pleased with this tool even though it’s expensive.

This is Fiskars’ 2” Bypass Lopper (model number 394901-if you’re looking for this in the store, you’ll have to go by the barcode number: 0 46561 80409 1). These are definitely heavy-duty loppers. They have a nice feel in the hands, including multiple hand positions so you can choke up on them if you need to. The shock reducing bumper works really well (see Photo 1). It’s a moveable metal piece that’s attached via a rubber mount. So while you have metal on metal when you close the loppers, there’s very little impact. Another nice feature is that you can sharpen the blade, or, if you’re not into that, you can replace it by removing two screws. It’s winter as I write this, but I took the loppers out and easily cut several branches. The loppers aren’t exactly light, but I wouldn’t call them heavy either; they have a solid feel to them, and they cut really nice. They come with a full lifetime warranty.

Got this pruning lopper to clean up several large overgrown trees and shrubs around our property. I went bigger than probably necessary because I wanted to make sure the job was done with ease. And I couldn't be happier. Cold temps have kept me from going outside but I was able to test it on a piece of 1x2 in my garage. First let me say this is constructed like a set of bold cutters. The hinges are smooth, the blade is sharp, and it opens up to a nice width to handle almost any mid-sized branch. When cutting I did have to exert some force, but once through the cut was clean and smooth, important when pruning so the remaining branch can heal properly.

This is the best and most rugged bypass lopper that I have used and it is made very well to last a lifetime. This bypass lopper easily cuts through soft wood and hard wood branches including up to 2" diameter oak branches with relative ease compared to other bypass loppers that I have used that struggle to cut through thick branches in one pass and often require several passes. Like it that this bypass lopper has a shock absorber for closing the handles to reduce the shock on your wrists which also acts as a stop to help extend the life of the cutting blades. This bypass lopper has a lot of leverage with its 20" long handles and is approximately 28" long overall. The long handles make it easier to cut branches that are low to the ground without having to bend as much and also to reach branches higher up in trees or shrubs without a ladder. The handles are all metal and the handgrips are comfortable to grip and each handgrip is attached to each handle with a screw to prevent the handgrips from moving or sliding off the handle. These bypass loppers are much more comfortable and more efficient to use than other bypass loppers that I have used and they weigh approximately 4 pounds.

Very sharp and made job easier

I bought these because I bent a handle on my old loppers. Yes I was totally cutting larger branches than I was supposed to but figured I’ll never stop doing that so I bought the sturdiest pair on the shelf. They’re great.
