Q:After my tank fills completely I get air bubbles coming from the bottom of my fill valve for about a minute and then these stop. Is this a sign that something is wrong with the fill valve? Makes noise as they rise to the top of the tank

Answer This Question

A:  No, chances are you are getting air in your water supply prior to it getting to the toilet tank. Either that or there in air in the bottom of the stem which will work itself out after a few flushes. As long as the valve works properly its all good.

by|Jun 16, 2022

A:  Yes I bought mine last week I’ve got the labor install under an hour and it was an excellent experience

by|Mar 2, 2022

A:  Bubbles coming from the bottom of the fill valve is normal. That's the water that comes in to refill your tank and the bubbles are the air that's mixed in with the water that's coming from your pipes. Q:can this be used for a toilet with the buttons on the top to flush

    Answer This Question

    A:  No

    by|May 30, 2020

A:  This only a fill valve, so if the button on top only lifts the flapper valve to flush, it should work just fine.

      by|Dec 18, 2019

A:  Yes this fill valve can be used in a large range of toilets

        by|Jan 22, 2020

A:  Since this part only controls the fill and not the flush I would say yes.

          by|Dec 1, 2019

A:  Probably. If your toilet is not a dual flush. Just look inside and see what's in there already.

A:  First, if possible I would just slam it up and down and see it it will stop. Then the maybe bad news. Toto toilets are not always happy with “universal” parts. Check the Toto web site with your model number. Cheers, Jim

A:  only if the sound like a cry bothers you. if you mean the toilet flushing occasionally by itself I would definetly replace the float

          by|Sep 19, 2019

A:  Hello Pat, I don't know what a "ghost flush' is referring to, however, a small particulate caught in the diaphragm of the fill valve could be the source of the "loud cry". Replacing the Fill Valve is about the least expensive thing to do with a toilet (other than the flapper). I believe that replacing the fill valve with a Fluidmaster will give you a ghost of a chance to rid yourself of the loud cry. You might want to wait until November, the cry might be useful for Halloween.

          by|Sep 26, 2019

A:  Should you replace the valve? This depends on different factors. If water level is below the top of the overflow drain pipe, then water is coming from the small pipe that goes from the drain valve into the overflow drain pipe. Fluidmaster recommends that this small pipe does not stick into the overflow drain pipe, they provide an attachment with their kit which you should use. If water level is at the top level of the overflow drain pipe, you can try to adjust the height of the float (plastic ball around the stem of the fill valve) by turning the big plastic screw. If water is still leaking, then you may consider replacing the fill valve. Hopefully this may solve your problem. Regarding you issue with the crying like sound, there can be many factors (e.g. drying washer in the fill valve), it may be better to replace the valve. Replacement is a simple process and directions that come with the kit is pretty useful.

A:  Yes I would recommend replacing the fill valve.

The Fluidmaster 400A Toilet Fill Valve is the de facto, industry standard ballcock replacement. I have been using them for at least 35 years. Since they are the very best solution for all standard toilet tanks, I am frankly surprised that standard ballcocks (with floats) are even in use any longer, particularly given that Fluidmaster flush valves are so far superior to ballcocks, and they have been sold since the late 1950’s. The Fluidmaster valve has undergone some changes over time, but essentially remains the same excellent, reliable solution that they have always been. Installing Fluidmaster 400 fill valves is really a very simple and straightforward process, and the printed instructions are definitive and comprehensive. If you can use a very few simple hand-tools, you really don’t need to pay a plumbers expensive service visit charges and marked-up charges for the part (and this most certainly also applies to flapper valve replacement, as well). I have always found the Fluidmaster fill valve to be very reliable, and long-lasting; typically for several years, or more. (How frequently the fill valve might need to be replaced is dependent upon the water quality/hardness/chlorination level, as well as the volume of use, since ultimately the rubber seal and the water passage will be affected. I’m going to share a little “secret” that every service plumber I know employs when replacing an old Fluidmaster fill valve with a new one. I have seen many plumbers leave the threaded shank in place, raise the lock-ring and pull off the main valve body and then install the replacement valve body (top section) in the reverse process. Replacements are done in just that manner every day. In doing so, after the water stop-valve is closed and the toilet is flushed to remove most of the water, it is unnecessary to bail out the remaining water since the threaded shank is not being removed. Several steps in the replacement process, including disconnecting the water supply line and removing and replacing the threaded shank section are thereby avoided. I always find it useful to quickly flush out the water supply line and new toilet valve when installing new valves (and this also applies to replacing sink/shower plumbing cartridges, as well). Just twist off the top cap, hold an inverted cup over the flush valve while briefly, partially opening the water-stop valve (just enough to flow enough water to flush the pipe and valve body – not with full pressure). This will clear any particulate debris prior to it potentially clogging the flush valve. I also prefer to purchase the Fluidmaster 400A fill valves in the 3-Pack, which is more economical and a good value.

Being a plumber, I have used these Fluidmaster 400A Fill Valve for over 30 years! Minor changes have been made over the years have only made it better and easier to install. I recommend this product for professionals and homeowners alike as it is extremely easy to install, inexpensive and will last for decades! The only wearable part is a rubber washer that will last for years and years without needing replacement but can be replaced without replacing the entire valve. Would give it six stars if it was possible.
