Questions & Answers

Why won't my toilet sit tightly against the floor after replacing my wax ring with the fluid master.

Should we of not used the spacer that came with it?
Asked by: BH
My flange sits a bit less than 1/8" lower than the new flooring. Including the distance into the toilet base where the contact would be made, that was slightly under 3/4" - I measured the blue part in-store, which was under 1/2" thick and flexible - too short for my application. The black spacer was much stiffer and thick, so I did not take a chance on this combo - putting strain on the toilet bolts is a bad idea. Fluidmaster could include other spacer thicknesses OR an additional part to sell. For my situation, I opted for the Danco Perfect Seal. If your flange sits on top of your flooring or about 3/8-1/2" below and is level, I believe the Better than Wax product would work well and be less messy.

Do you still need to putty/silicone/seal the bottom of the toilet?

Asked by: bosavi
The answers at the top are correct, yes you should. The other answers are from people that missunderstood your question, they must have thought that you where asking about the area around the drain flange. You are inquiring about the outer edge of the toilet that is visable. Sealing will keep water from getting under the base were it could cause mildew or mold, also if you ever over-flowed a toilet that water would find it's way under the toilet, a child missing the toilet etc, also looks better. The silicone is not that difficult to remove if needed, the reviewer that said that tiles came up with old toilet must have had very loose tiles or used an epoxy instead of silicone.

Should the seal be wet after use?

Installed a toilet in 2015 using this seal. No apparent issues. Just pulled the toilet to redo the flooring. The seal is wet (fully wet) but the flooring shows no sign of leaks. Is this normal?
Asked by: Monk
It's possible. Any residual water in the toilet drain could have splashed out onto the seal as you removed the toilet. As long as the water was not leaking out from under the toilet you should be okay.

What can I use when the seal isn't enough and the included 1/2" gasket is too much?

Our flange sits just about 1/8" above the tiles. It doesn't seem to be enough just using the BTW Toilet Seal. The included gasket makes it too thick. What can I use to finish the job?
Asked by: Distressed
I had the same problem, I cut the spacer down to 1\4" with razor blade. It was too much work, wax would be easier.

Customer Reviews

Better than Wax Universal Toilet Seal is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1765.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Might not be the best choice for leveled flanges My toilet has a leveled flange and according to the instructions it said to use the spacer, however with the spacer the toilet was just way too high even after attempting to tighten the nuts. It was almost 1/2in off the ground. I removed the spacer, and then it just felt like it was too loose and wouldn't be able to make a seal. I had also bought the Danco wax seal just in case, I opened the box read instructions, installed it, the toilet fit right on top and I could actually feel myself compressing the seal while tightening the nuts. Three flushes and no leaks. Again my flange was leveled with the floor, and it didn't feel like it would make a seal without a spacer, but maybe other people had better experience with this type of seal. I'm not your typical customer, I have mechanical background and do all the maintenance in my house.I wasted 2hrs second guessing myself with this seal, and finished the job in 10min with Danco. So if your flange is leveled you been warned.

Though this looks like a great product and probably is great for many applications, I came to regret choosing it. Pros: The bolts are solid brass and the washers and nuts are stainless steel. The design of the blue gasket; the center is long enough to shunt waste past places it could otherwise get hung up on. Cons: To accomodate varying flange heights, the kit comes in two pieces. You use only the blue seal if your flange is above floor level. If the top of your flange is even with or just below the floor, you add the black gasket. The top of my flange was about 1/8" above the floor. With the blue gasket only, I could not feel any resistance as I set the toilet down, so it didn't seem fully sealed. Adding the black gasket made the stack too thick; I tightened the toilet's bolts close to the breaking point and still the toilet was not solidly on the floor (it rocked). Ultimately I had to cut the black gasket down to get a seal I was happy with. Though this product is as easy or easier to use than a wax gasket, it doesn't solve the basic problem of knowing your toilet is exactly centered over the flange.

My waste flange is level with the floor. I used the blue "main" rubber seal and the spacer as the instructions indicated. I placed the toilet onto the two hold down bolts. The front of the bowl unit was flush with the floor but the back of the bowl was one inch above. I did not think that any tightening of the bolts would compress the hard foam gasket on the spacer. I called Fluidmaster and the technician who immediately answered the phone told me I was using "old instructions" and if my flange was flush with the floor I should just omit the spacer. I did as he instructed. The toilet bowl is now seated on the floor and so far there are no leaks. A final determination of how good the toilet and seal works will come in the next few days. So far it seems like a very good product.

I installed it but I'm still having trouble with my toilet. I can't blame the seal b/c I discovered that wasn't the only issue. After the install of the Fluidmaster, my toilet Is still rocky. Again I can't blame the product. However, ever plumber that I've spoken with has said they ARE going to use a Wax seal and they do not recommend the new No Wax one I chose. Therefore, I offer an AVERAGE rating. Still my toilet issue isn't resolved. Fingers Crossed, hopefully this evening it will be. I love the idea of the No Wax considering my amateur-ness. The clean, no mess expectation is what sold me. It seems it 'll just be another piece of something laying around my garage now. Ugghhhh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Neat and well working product We used this toilet seal for installing brand new Kohler toilet. The box with seal contains everything to accomplish installation. All I needed was wrench and measuring tape. If you provide replacement on existing toilet, you will need also putty knife to scrape off old wax seal. This kit has besides fasteners two other parts: "main" rubber seal and spacer. Enclosed instructions could not be better, besides the text they also show all steps in pictures. The most important is making the right decision, how you will mount the seal and that depends on how is floor flange installed (see pic. 3), whether with the spacer or without (pic. 4 & 5). My floor flange was mounted above the finished floor, so we did not need to use the spacer (see pic.6). Remaining installation is very simple. This product works fine, absolutely no mess and no any leaks. Fluidmaster provides 10 years warranty.

The company needs to install the seal simply based on the info on their instructions and video and see how far they get with a flush installation ring. The preposterous suggestion of sitting on the toilet to compress the dense filler seal is laughable. If so, why not put in instructions. In short, the manufacturer simply needs better engineering. Providing instructions that require the purchaser to further "engineer" a fit is ludicrous. Product should not be on the market as it is. BTW, I got the darn thing to work, in spite of the poor instructions. I shouldn't have to modify the product to fit!
