About This Product

FireGuard E-84 is a superior intumescent fire retardant coating that creates a thin fire retardant and fire resistant barrier on a wide range of interior building surfaces. In the event of a fire, this product can prevent the spread of flames and reduce smoke levels to aid in the protection of life and property. When FireGuard E-84 Intumescent Paint is exposed to heat generated by flames, it swells to form an insulating char barrier that fire cannot penetrate. Without a source of fuel, the fire is unable to spread. In addition to protecting from flame, this char barrier functions as an insulating blanket to help protect the underlying substrate from the intense heat of a fire. This can postpone or even prevent ignition for up to two hours (ASTM E-119). Beyond preventing the spread of flames, FireGuard E-84 can reduce the production of smoke a leading cause of fire related fatalities.

Q:Can it be used on projects for 600 degree heat?
      by|Oct 16, 2023
      1 Answer
      Answer This Question

A:  It would not be recommended to use in conditions where the everyday operating temperatures are over the activation point, the material is designed to react to high temperatures to prevent the spread of fire. If you are looking for a material the is just resistant to high heat and retains its original aesthetics you will want to look for something like automotive engine enamel or break caliper coatings. For more information on if the Intumescent coating is the right fit for your project please reach out to a technical representative at 800-332-6327.

The paint sprayed easily. You just have to apply many thin coats to achieve the desired thickness.

Used to give my cabin some extra fire protection in case of a forest fire. Excellent product. I used 4 x 5gal (20gals total) to spray 2 thick coats over my cabin in the woods. Including a shed and the well pump house. Cabin is 2000 sq ft. The paint only comes in white, it spayed beautifully and gave excellent coverage. I ended up with 2 gals left over which I added to the green top coat .. it mixed in just fine and also sprayed just fine. I figure it's cheap insurance incase of a fire. I painted a large piece of cardboard and let it dry and then tried to light the cardboard with my propane torch. IT WOULDN"T burn even with direct flame on the painted cardboard. I have also made some custom window shutters which also got painted with the fireproof paint to add to my fire protection. Next project is to add a metal roof to the cabin and fingers crossed the house might survive a fire ....

Started flaking off after a year.
I followed the instructions and applied it with a sprayer directly to clean new wood siding. Applied the top coat a day later. After a year the sides of the building facing direct sunlight it started peeling off.

Response from Tech RepMay 30, 2023
John, we are sorry to hear you are having issues with you application. Based off the brief description provided it appears that the issue that is occurring is related to moisture permeating the system and not just the coating itself. How that moisture is entering the assembly is the question that needs to be resolved or the issues will continue to occur. Traditionally, with wood siding and Hardie siding projects, the moisture is permeating through either the backside of the siding material or through voids in the exterior finish layer of protection. Traditionally, wood siding and hardie siding materials come factory primed with a thin primer, which is generally only sufficient for protection from the elements while the material is in transit to the project or on the project site, it is always recommended to prime the siding materials prior to the application of any coating or system, especially a hydroscopic material, such as the intumescent product to prevent moisture from migrating through the siding material and into the intumescent coating. Moisture can also penetrating through voids or pin holes in a finish material which would allow moisture to soften the intumescent coating, to eliminate moisture from penetrating through the surface the FireGuard Z-1 tie coating is required prior to the installation of the final finish. The bubbles are occurring due to moisture being trapped between the E-84 and the final finish. As the sun hits the surface coating and heats up, the intumescent coating would then release the moisture through the drying process trapping vapor between it and the finish material, causing the bubbling and peeling to occur. To resolve the issue the source of the moisture must be identified and mitigated. Please reach out to a technical specialist at 800-332-6327 to discuss the issues that are occurring.
