I guess it depends on how large the gap. I had gaps large enough that I could see light through on my front doors and the smell of smoke during the CA wildfires was inside my house. I had to double the seal in some areas where the gap was larger, but it worked great!
Unfinished means that the wood fibers are loose. Not a good idea ever. I suggest using a shellac based sealer first.
