Answer This Question

A:  Hello, our Pro-Start Starter Strip Shingles are 38" in width. It is not recommended that the starter strips line up with the first course of shingles. For more information on our starter strip installation steps, please contact our technical team at 877-GAF-ROOF. Thank you.

Q:should these be cut at the ridge or run over the ridge

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Starter strips should be cut at the ridge. Starter Strips overhang eaves and rakes by 1/4" to 3/4". Where the drip edge extends out from the eaves and rakes, Pro-Start Starter Strips may be placed flush with the drip edge. For any additional questions, please give our technical team a call at 877-GAF-ROOF.

Too narrow, too short, may cause leaks
These starters are about 1.5” short. This means your shingles on top will end up at a nail or gap on top of each other and major cause of leaks. Next they are not wide enough, 6.5”. Drip edges extend 6” on the roof, this strip lines up with them creating ¼” height 6” up. Then gaf shingle’s nailing strip is between 6.5” and 7.5” which is right in the big gap/space created causing tons of nail pops and possible leaks. What a disappointment for a company that’s been around over 135 years.

                Easy to use
As with most roofing projects we normally just cut off the tabs and use the rest for a starter course. Since we were close on shingles we went with the starter strip. Easy to use, comes in an easy to split 2 pieces. Just nail it up and your ready to go. Just a note if your using 39 3/8” shingles then cut 3” from the first starter strip on the eave. If you forget then just cut off 6” from the first eave shingle. On the rake they make easy work of the job.

Good starter, goes 120LF. Price is still a bit high but overall good product.

These starter strip shingles were easy to use and fairly inexpensive. They seemed to be more convenient than the starter strip rolls, which can be awkward to install especially for a single worker.
