Asked by richard July 5, 2018

There are no added flame retardants. This product is mostly limestone powder blended in a fiberglass mesh in such a way as to make it paper like in feel. The limestone, aka calcium carbonate, is harmless and is the added ingredient in many calcium supplements sold as vitamins. The CA prop is from a by product, the quartz silica (sand like powder), as long term exposure (years) to crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis. California would ban water if it were not so ubiquitous because you can't breathe water, i.e. water can cause drowning if inhaled. As it is not flamable, it can slow the rate of burning of your roof during a fire, similar to what asphalt shingles would do but at much less weight per square foot. It won't make your roof 'fire proof.'

is this the same as #30 felt?

Asked by Jonathan March 13, 2018

No, not at all. Felt will become brittle like a potato chip and crumble with time. Also, felt is flamable. The synthetic roof underlayments are far superior and many jurisdictions no longer allow felt. This product slows down fire burning similar to what a roof shingle would do, so it is ideal under metal roofs where the shingles have been removed. If you leave your shingles on, you do not really need this product.

Can i use this on the underside of metal roof to stop condensate

Asked by Dugan November 26, 2017

No, as the mositure is not emanating from your roof deck (you would have serious rot problems if it were). You need an underlayment under any metal roof, and if you do not have shingles under the metal roof, then this product can deter fire to the same degree as roofing shingles can.

can this be used on a wall? can it be used in contact with XPS, EPS, polyiso? will either dama...

Asked by yous November 16, 2016

Yes, it has a permeance of 3 as I recall, so it is breatheable. And it is relatively inert so it won't hurt anything. But why bother? The underlayment is not a fire barrier! It is just fire resistant like an asphalt shingle. It would be better--much much better-- to use exterior rated gypsum boars (sheetrock) like Denseglass or Securock underneathe the polyisocyanoureate. And polyiso has the best fire performance of the insulations that you mentioned.

The stated '' LIFETIME WARRANTY'' has so many ''rules'' it basically has NO warranty at all. It's just $200.00 felt paper. fancy WORDS signifying nothing. I'd like to see a VIDEO showing a fire test-- and a fire class rating posted in the info. Any chance of posting that for customers GAF ?

Hello, unlike typical asphalt felts, this product is tested by UL to provide a Class A fire system rating underneath asphalt shingles and a variety of other roof coverings, such as wood, metal, and slate. If you are not in need of an upgraded system fire rating, you may want to consider a typical roofing underlayment which will be of lower cost. As you're probably aware, many wood, metal and slate systems do not achieve a Class A fire rating by themselves. VersaShield, when used in these systems, helps upgrade the fire rating from Class B or Class C to a Class A. UL's certification directory is for public review, so if you would like verification or evidence of the actual UL Certification, you can try here: https://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/index.htm Thank you. gaf
