AnswerDear Patrick, GAF strongly recommends properly removing the old siding for the best results (any removal and disposal of asbestos containing products should be done by a professionally trained asbestos-removal contractor). For best results we do recommend using WeatherSide Backer Strips when installing WeatherSide Fiber Cement Shingles. The backer strips help serve as a secondary layer of protection at the joints between shingles. Our technical team at 877-GAF-ROOF (877-423-7663), Option 5 is happy to assist with any additional questions.
