Questions & Answers

Can I wrap it on my floor joists before installing a trex floor on my deck

Asked by: Kdog
I'm a roofing contractor and use this sort of membrane regularly. I intend to use this in conjunction with a Trex Rainescape system on my deck. Rainescape is a waterproofing system designed to shield the underside of your deck from precipitation. Rainescape suggests using their butyl tape and caulk at all joists and laps as the means to waterproof against fastener penetration leaks. Their tape is is extremely thin and anytime someone suggests caulk as a means of waterproofing beware. So this membrane, which is ice and water shield, has much more body (is thicker) than the Rainescape butyl tape. As such it will seal around the penetrating fasteners much better than the thin butyl tape and smearings of caulk. If you want to really go the additional extra mile get the HT version of this membrane (high temperature) designed to withstand heat generated by metal roofs. I don't think its necessary to go to this HT version but it certainly would be more forgiving against heat (if your deck is a darker color). As for concern that foot traffic might adversely affect it I doubt it. I expect it to compress somewhat from the weight but that's where the extra thickness provides extra forgiveness. The Rainescape system is better served utilizing a thicker more self sealing membrane such as this rather than their micro thin butyl tape. You'll have to cut the 36 inch wide roll down to workable 4-6 inch strips to cover the joists and trough seams etc... but considering the trouble involved in correcting a leaking Rainescape system probably well worth the effort.

Can it be used on CAMPER ROOFS????

Asked by: Sherry
It can be used on campers. Best to apply in the morning where as it gets Very sticky once the temp starts to rise. Make sure surface is clean of any debris, cut to size, peel and stick. Do not know how long it will last with different weather changes but is an excellent product and does what it was made to do.

Can I use ice and water shield roll roofing under a metal roof

Asked by: DARYL
Sometimes, but it depends. Grace's website states it "may be used on sloped roofs, under mechanically attached roof coverings such as asphalt shingles, slate, tile, cedar, and standing seam metal in many climate and assembly conditions (see limitations for additional information)." The limitations state "Do not install under copper, COR-TEN® , or zinc metal roofing in high altitudes" because of high temperatures. GRACE ULTRA™ is recommended in those applications. While many metal roofs cannot be installed over granular underlayment, since Ice and Water Shield is smooth (embossed) it may be compatible with your assembly. There are chemical concerns depending on your metal finish, so you should confirm with the metal roofing supplier. Many metal roofs are attached using screws, where Ice and Water Shield prefers smooth fasteners for the best seal. Note that grace makes GRACE ICE & WATER SHIELD® HT specifically for use under metal roofing. You would be well served to contact Grace's technical support and ask about your specific application to confirm the best product match.

Can i use this for a vapor barrier on a concrete floor before laying flooring

Asked by: Ritche
I would say yes. Might be a little over kill. It's an amazing product. I build tiny houses on wheels. I cover the entire roof with it. You will be doing the same thing.

This is a good product and I would have rated it higher except for the fact that when I installed it the "RIP CORD" feature that is suppose to help slit the paper backing in half to make easier to install actually RIPPED a hole though the entire product while I was laying it down in the valley of my roof. The "RIP CORD" was embedded so deep into the rubber in some parts it just split right through the rubber instead of just the paper. This was very annoying since I was trying to protect the roof valleys and it splits a hole right in the valley, not to mention the premium price you are paying to install it. This was my first run so I learned from it and never used the "RIP CORD" feature again and didn't have any problems with the other valleys. I will use the product again and I do recommend it....... JUST DON'T USE THE RIP CORD......IT SUCKS!!! and it will "RIP" a hole in your expensive underlayment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product This product REALLY seals and keeps the water out. It adheres to the sheathing - no nails required, and self-seals any nail holes created by shingling or any other activity. The only drawback is that it is a little awkward to install in large sheets, because the material is floppy and wants to stick immediately to anything as soon as the backing paper is removed. For this reason the directions suggest about 15 feet as the maximum length piece to work with. On the other hand, it can be shaped around almost anything, and cut into smaller pieces for patching around obstacles. Because it bonds to itself so well, you can even install it vertically and cut patch pieces to fix small "oops" locations. It is somewhat expensive, but in the context of an entire roofing job, maybe 10% of the whole cost. But why scrimp on materials when you want a roof that will be trouble-free for at least 20 years? All-in-all, a truly great product. I won't use anything else.

But I was Appling it in 101 degree weather. So far it has Stopped all my roof leaks. (My roof decking is 96 years old Tongue and grove 3/4 inch oak wood that are 12ft. long in spots.) Rapping the Chimney was challenging although it came out very well when I was finished. Back rolling the product made the application very easy. (Just follow instructions on box, it's just that easy!) If you have leaks in a roof, the GCP Ice and Water Shield Will stop the problem. Last roofer did Not seal the joints and splits in the roof it's self before applying just Tar Paper, then the shingles. (unable to post photos, not enough pixels?) Thanks, Leak Stopper ~
