Does a whole-house water softener and/or filters reduce water pressure? This concerns me because our utility district already provides only minimum water pressure -- I believe about 35 p.s.i. in the main lines -- and the district declines to increase pressure. We need one badly because my aging wife suffers from psoriasis and anything to soften our hard water could help.

After a few tries the 11 answers popped up. We just installed this and the flow rate on all of the faucets and outdoor hose bibs it's much lower than our old unit that we replaced from Culligan what is causing this restriction in flow and how is it rectified it is not satisfactory by a long shot thank you

Will this product plus the water filter addition fix my problem of having white residue on my dishes after i run the dish washer?

I also have a reddish brown residue inside my toilet bowls and my dogs water bowl which i think it is iron or maganese. Will this be fixed.
Asked by: Paul
Hi Paul- Softening water is accomplished by passing hard water over a "resin bed" of plastic beads that attract the minerals in the water like a magnet. Water without the hardness flows from the softener and throughout your house. The softener takes out only calcium and magnesium from the water. Also, maximum iron removal is 8 ppm. Iron present in water is measured in parts per million (PPM) and is sometimes called "rust". The total PPM of iron and the different types of iron are determined by chemical analysis. The water needs to be tested in order to know what chemicals are present in the water. The water softener will remove moderate amounts of ferrous (clear water) iron. Learn more at - WATER SYSTEMS IRON IN THE WATER: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=18865 - You'll notice the difference the first time you bathe or shower with softened water. Soft water feels noticeably smooth to the skin. It also makes your home easy to clean by reducing hard-water build-up. If I install this myself, is the warranty still valid? I have a water hardness of 31 gpg and a 3 person household, is this the correct unit to purchase?
Asked by: Frank
The warranty is for the unit, so installing it yourself is OK as long as you don't damage it. For your hardness and household size, this one is a good choice.

How do I turn off the water softener? I moved into a new home with one and the water is too soft (can’t get shampoo out of my hair) and I do not want to use it. Thank you
Asked by: Wendy
If you came from a home without a water softener, then this reaction is understandable. However if the water in this home contains iron and is hard, turning off the water softener (placing it in bypass and unplugging the softener itself) may not be the solution you really want. Try testing your water to determine if there is iron and how hard the water is. Iron will leave residue on you tubs and in your washer, both clothes and dishes. If you find out the softener is there for this reason, and the water is to silky for your taste, then adjust the setting and/or the blending valve on the unit to your desired taste. If you do not understand what I mean, then read the manual or look it up on line. This will reduce the softness of the water. The unit is very easy to adjust once you understand how. Keep in mind if it was put there for iron, it will also reduce the effectiveness of it also. Hope I helped you at least a little.

Set-up was super easy and the install was not that bad. The unit is plastic which was concerning at first, however it seems to be pretty solid and should last a few years. The unit was slightly wobbly at first when it was empty which I did not like. However, it is molded plastic so that does happen. Once the unit is filled with Salt and water it all takes form so it stands solid now. I connected to 3/4" PEX and installed three ball valves so I could isolate the unit from my plumbing directly if I ever have the need. I would recommend doing this as well for the added $10 or so per ball valve. It may save you some headache in the future. If I would do it again I would have purchased 10ft straight sections of PEX rather than a roll. The PEX at this size is not forgiving and was giving me some issues with trying to make and maintain a straight section of PEX. All and all I'm happy with the product as it does what is advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made a difference It was installed about a month ago (along with a chlorine filter). So far, it has worked great with no problems. I had hard city water before. However, I did not want completely soft water, as I don't like the "oily feel". This unit allows you to adjust a mix of how much water is softened (one reason I bought it). After installation I adjusted it to what I believe is a "good mix". The water feels only slightly oily in the shower.....but what a difference! Dishes in the dishwasher now sparkle (had to use vinegar to counteract the hardness before or everything came out with a powdery residue). I use potassium (didn't want sodium). my water is now drinkable - and I drink it often now...no more chlorine (from filter) and no more powdery aftertaste (softener). I am impressed with the product so far. And for $350 to install both (by local plumber), I am so far ahead than if I had a water softening company install a system (got quotes of $2k-$3k). Time will tell if it lasts...but I'm completely satisfied at the moment.

I still have to say that while it worked it worked well. I purchased this unit in late September of 2017 and it worked until late may of 2018. I made three calls to GE. The first ended with "you'll have to call another number" which I was given. The individual who answered was very polite and the end result was "i'll send you a control panel right out". Two weeks later I called to find out where the panel was and talked with a young man who was again very polite. The result of that conversations was "sorry but it appears the order was canceled. I'll get this corrected and get the panel right to you." Two weeks now and i'm still without the very expensive softener and using hard water while it sit there reminding me that I wasted a lot of money for a few months of soft water. When I can afford to we will go looking for another softener but it won't be GE.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy and Reliable This is my third Water Softener. In the early '80's I replaced a different brand softener with GE. I liked it right away. I found it more economical on salt. When I moved to a different place, it did not have a softener. I was spoiled by GE water softener I had that I could not stand the water without a softener. I had one installed. Now I am in my third place. First I did was to have a GE 4000 Water Softener installed. I found GE 4000 efficient, quiet, reliable and effective. I looked at other brands, spoke with other water softener vendors, I found myself back with GE. While the system is very sophisticated, the programming was made very simple. In using a water softener, I found that I have to make occasional adjustments on the level of the water hardness. Unlike the previous softener I had, I did not have to pull out the manual every time I need to make adjustments. This is a big plus for me.

Been waiting 2 weeks since he broke it and they tell me "we'll give you an update next week". I see why GE is going under.
