The standout feature over other powerstrips is the ability to close off unused receptacles. Other features I like about this outlet are the overspaced 3 outlets for transformers. The on/off/reset master switch is not as modern as the rest of the design but is a utility orange lit when on through a clear rocker switch. The LED "protected" and "grounded" lights let you know the status of your surge suppressor. USB charging ports (2) are a welcome convenience and I always appreciate a 90 degree flat plug so that you can fit furniture tighter against this plug without the risk of damaging the cord. 4ft cord can be limiting but was enough for my uses.

I am finding this to be an excellent 2100 Joules surge protector. It has eight outlets with three of them far enough apart to allow for the power adapters a lot of current low voltage/current modern day electronics use. A plus is the twist-to-lock safety covers for those of us with young children and grandchildren. No need to purchase additional outlet cover safety caps if used in an area where preschoolers' play. It also comes with two USB charging ports which both my wife and I find very convenient. Well done GE!

I was looking for a good and reliable surge protector for my home office until I find this 8 outlet surge protector. It's very convenient for my work because I need to connect my cellular phone, my IPad, my computer, my TV etc. What I like about this surge protector that it has many great features like enough space for adapters, it has twist-to-lock covers, a two USB charging ports, ground indicator light, on/off switch which includes an integrated ciurcuit breaker for overload protection, power filter for a sharper picture. Something really important is the automatic shutdowm technology installed. This is in case the protection capacity is exceeded by a power surge the indicator won't lit up and the power will be shutdown to the outlets in order to protect all my electronic equipment. This is a great advantage on this product.

Overall this is a nice surge protector strip. It has a row of outlets for 5 regular plugs and a row spaced out further for 3 transformer plugs, and then 2 USB ports. The USB ports is why I purchased this for the most part, a close second would be the 3 outlets for transformers. Everything plugs in nicely and each outlet comes with a built in cover you just turn to "close" it. This is a good safety feature as well as protection from dust & foreign objects. Though the "strip" isn't huge the surface area is almost twice that of what is used for the outlets. Also, most importantly, I would prefer the on/off switch be either on the top or the opposite side of the cord though. This way the cord can be facing toward the wall like it should be and you can still reach down and turn it on or off. With this it would be toward the wall and hard to get to. I like to plug things into this and have it turned off completely when not in use as to keep from using residual electricity and not be concerned about lightning strikes. The way this one is configured it is hard to reach to the back of it to find the switch.

This review is for the GE model # 14049 surge suppressor that I was given a chance to check out. The 14049 offers 8 three prong outlets (along with “twist-to-lock” safety covers) and 2 USB charging ports and has a 4 foot long cord. The unit is rated at 2100 joules – a good rating; there’s not enough room in a H/D review to explain “joules” but a quick Internet search will offer pages that answer questions on how much protection this is. It’s U/L rated, and is tagged as “indoor use” only. GE backs the unit with a limited lifetime warranty, and there’s a $200,000 “connected equipment guarantee”. I’d advise reading the details of that equipment guarantee, there are a number of pre-requisites that must be in place before damaged equipment will be paid for. YMMV. The unit itself has an excellent fit and finish, no sharp or unfinished edges. I did find that on my particular unit quite a bit of effort is required to fully seat an electrical plug; this may “wear in” over time and, of course, most of what I have plugged in will simply remain plugged in. However my laptop cord frequently is unplugged for transit and it requires more pressure to reinsert in the GE surge suppressor than I have found in other circuit protectors. The USB ports are handy indeed – although on my LG phone I get a warning that the rate of charge is “slow”; I think that is related more to my specific phone than it is to the actual power coming out of the GE surge suppressor. I charged my e-reader using the USB port and had no issues at all. I’ve posted a photo showing the “wall wart” chargers I have plugged into the GE – there’s enough spacing between the outlets to allow some flexibility in arranging chargers. The “safety covers” are good to keep small kids from plugging things in and also keep dust and foreign materials from accidentally falling into the power slots. There are, of course, indicator lights (see photo) that show that the unit is functioning and is properly grounded. The off/on switch is on the end of the unit (see photo) and is lighted as well. This is a nicely designed and built surge suppressor that comes with a lifetime warranty at a reasonable market price. Many “surge suppressors” are not much more than multi-outlet extension cords with an in-line circuit breaker attached. The GE 14049 is considerably more protective than those types of devices. HTH Regards, Jim

Handy power/surge protector with USB charging
The GE 8-Outlet surge protector/USB power cord is very useful and it often gets moved around the house for different uses. The flat plug makes it easy to use in outlets located behind furniture and I like that I can twist to close any outlet that is not in use. The two USB charging ports are also handy for general use when using my phone and tablet.

I am using this power with complete confidence to power my computer and monitor, comforted by the surge protection feature and $200,000 guarantee extended by the manufacturer. The turn and lock feature of each individual outlet means that I do not need to worry about exposed unused outlets. The USB power jacks are also a necessary addition with all of today's electronics.

Great power strip with 2 USB ports! I like the fact that this power strip has two usb power ports as well. I find that you can never have enough of those around. It allows me to eliminate two plug-ins for USB devices that would normally require two of the outlets. I think its a great idea. It also allows you to baby proof the outlets with a twist of the cover. Also very handy.
