GE Silicone II Paintable Silicone Caulk offers a combination of silicones superior performance & the paintability of acrylic caulk. Water protection is critical in many caulking applications from windows and doors to kitchens and baths. Many times these jobs require a caulk that is paintable as well as waterproof. Paintable Silicone combines the superior adhesion and durability performance of 100% silicone with the paintability of acrylic. While acrylic may be paintable, it breaks down in water over time and can shrink and crack, leaving gaps for water and air to seep through. Those leaks can lead to water damage, mold growth or higher energy bills. Issues such as these can translate into wasted energy, money, and ultimately time, when the project has to be redone.

Can I use GE paintable silicone to cover over galvanized fence staples which I would like to paint with acrylic paint ?

Based on what you are describing, GE Paintable Silicone should be effective for this purpose. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact customer service at 1-866-275-4372.

Does latex paint and primer stick to this? The tube only mentions that acrylic primer works well and that oil doesn't.

I used paintable caulk around a bathroom window in a shower area. Do I use latex or oil based paint to paint over this caulking

How to wash your hands

Asked by: JEDREK
Preventative washing has always worked very well for me. Right after running your finger along your bead, quickly wipe off the caulking while it's still wet on your finger. Paper towel is my prime choice, disposable and durable. Do not wet your hands, the caulk will not come off easily.

GE Silicone 2+ Paintable Silicone 10.1 oz. White Paintable Caulk is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OIL-BASED PAINT Tried to use this on the gaps around an outside basement doors– steel Bilco doors. Sanded and cleaned area thoroughly. Applied caulk. THEN I see the small print on the tube says "not reccomended for oil-based paint. If you need to cover with oil-based paint, first cover with a lates primer." Well, I was painting with an oil-based enamel (matching previous paint on the doors). So I painted over the caulk with a good latex primer. Even following these directions and allowing the latex primer to dry for 48 hours, the Rustoleum high-Performace Enamel I was using would not dry where it was on top of the caulk. It dried fine on the primer where it was not on the caulk, so somehow this caulk has something that bleeds through primer and interacts with oil paint. 4 days later, oil paint is still gummy with no sign of drying, so had to use benzyne and remove paint all down to the caulk. What a freakin' mess. Maybe this works ok with latex paint over it, but they should say loud and clear NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OIL-BASED PAINT, not burry it in fine print.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Turns yellow if not painted I bought this product hoping to fill the gaps that had developed between my white crown molding and ceiling. I initially used paintable latex caulk, which shrank over the years, so I thought this would be a great, fix-it-for-good without much hassle product. Looked great when applied, the white matched the molding and looked seamless. After a couple days of sun and UV light, my stomach sank as I notice a yellow ring around the perimeter of every room I touched up. I double-checked the container immediately, nowhere does it say it will yellow if not painted, nowhere does it say requires painting. When I called GE's customer service, the response was that they expect people to paint it, so labeling it wasn't necessary. My two hour fix turned into several evenings of repainting the entire crown molding and around the perimeter of each ceiling (which is noticeable, I try not to look at it). The GE representative offered up GE Groov as an alternative, promising it wouldn't turn color. Guess I will try that when I hang crown molding in my basement this weekend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality meets Value Was really surprised to read the bad reviews of this product after having used it numerous times myself both at my own home and at the homes of different customers. The clean-up is not easy, but NOT ANY different than any other silicone caulk. So, just like with all other silicone caulking, make sure you have some mineral spirits handy, if you're not very careful or experienced. Over time - this product does seem to hold and resist cracking and peeling better than other popular among contractors indoor/outdoor high grade siliconised latex product. I only apply it on previously primed or even painted surfaces, so it's not hard to clean it up after applying (just don't cut too much off the tip and it will be fine). It should be painted or it will yellow, like most other paintable caulking products. If you don't plan on painting it - get the non-paintable stuff. I've never had any problems with paint not sticking to it, but I also do not use cheap paint either. In my experience paint sticks to it just fine, just make sure you wait at least 30 minutes before painting it. For me and my customers so far - great combination of durability, quality and value. Couple years after use - no signs of cracking or paint peeling. Oh, and even folks servicing Mount Rushmore now switched to silicone caulking to fill cracks in stone - due to it's durability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great caulk if, U know how to use it. Works great in areas you need to paint. Wear disposable gloves for smoothing by hand. Do small areas on hot days as it will set up quickly and be impossible to smooth out. Will cause flash(different paint appearance) if used on bare wood & needs to be primed before finish coat in some applications. Will yellow if NOT painted...Designed to be painted...otherwise use the regular silicone. Hard to clean-up? ...lol, try using regular silicone. Overall good product...a lot less shrinkage/cracking than cheaper latex products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A difficult, expensive caulk with misleading labeling. TL/DR: There are better choices: If you need a paintable caulk, get a latex caulk. If you need water proof, mold resistance, get the 100% silicone caulk. Hmm, is someone manipulating reviews for this product? As of today, the top 4 reviews are all 5-stars, with up to 16 up-votes and 0 down-votes. All of the negative reviews are heavily down-voted. I call baloney. Anyway, lets get to the review. Consumers at HomeDepot have essentially two caulk options: 1) Paintable and 2) Non-paintable. Paintable caulks are usually water-based which makes for easy clean-up of tools or mistakes - at least until it dries. They do shrink a little as they dry - though most don't shrink much. So, why would you need anything else? Well, sometimes you need it to be water-proof and mold resistant - e.g. in a bathroom, especially in the show/tub where it's constantly exposed to water. Non-paintable silicone caulks are great for wet locations because they are super water-proof, mold resistant and tough once they cure. GE makes a great 100% silicon caulk. The problem with them is that they are harder to work with and difficult to clean up because they're completely impervious to water. They also need to cure rather than just dry out, which is fine, except sometimes they don't cure - especially when they get old which is why they have a "Use By" date. So, what is this caulk? It's a silicone caulk with additives to make it paintable. So, it has all of the difficulties that silicon paint has - harder to work with, difficult clean-up. Plus a couple others - 1) it's fairly soft and fragile, so it's easy to damage. 2) it's NOT mold resistant (mold actually grown quite well on and through it). 3) Unlike what the label says, it's totally inappropriate for wet areas like showers and tubs. Worse, after reading the label or product description, it would be easy to assume that this is the same as GE's 100% silicone caulk except that it's paintable. Plus, the branding is almost identical and its positioned on the shelf very close to the 100% silicone caulk. Which seems to be the goal. Folks buy it by mistake all the time. And once it's installed, who's got time to redo the job? ...Until a few months later when you find it's so moldy, gouged up and nasty that you have to dig it all back out and replace it. Bottom-line: There are better choices: If you need a paintable caulk, get a latex caulk. If you need water proof, mold resistance, get the 100% silicone caulk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only caulk I'll use This is the only caulk product I use. It offers all the benefits of silicone plus the ability to paint it. (It takes two coats to cover.) Unlike the caulk my builder used, this caulk has remained flexible and intact in a harsh exterior applications for years and years now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from nightmare product I spent the extra money to buy this product because silicone is generally longer lasting and it's called "paintable silicone". But when I applied this product it was very difficult to completely clean up--leaving an invisible film on the woodwork that showed up after it dried. I tried to get the film off as much as possible, but this stuff really makes a mess of the woodwork and walls. Then to top off this annoyance, I tried to paint it and the paint would not hold and wicked away from the areas that had the caulk on it--just like 100% non-paintable silicone does. Don't buy this product, it's not paintable as advertised and not worth the headaches.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from paints great! I have used this product for close to 10 years with great results, it don't get hairline cracks like most caulks. It can be a little messy when applying, but i generally apply after priming then put on 2 top coats of paint.
