Questions & Answers

Would two of these installed in parallel work....

....as a inexpensive substitute for a two stage filter?
Asked by: Richard
I installed two of these in parallel 20 years ago and they work great! They DO NOT reduce water pressure -- in fact, they inexorably flow twice as much as one unit. I had installed one unit initially and was changing FXUSC cartridges every 4-5 months or so (there are only two of us -- you will know when it's time because water pressure will start to reduce), so decided to install another in parallel. Now I get about 9-10 months between filter changes. Because they are installed in PARALLEL you not only get higher flow rates than one unit can provide but the flow is automatically balanced across both filters. Also, changing two filters (both units) simultaneously is simply more convenient too because the FXUSC filters (and most all others too) are sold in a 2-pack so rather than figure out how to keep of them clean for 4 or 5 months after the shrink-wrap package is opened, it's just easier to have two units and change both at the same time every 9-10 months. If you do decide to install two in parallel you will need to replace BOTH at the same time and with the SAME TYPE of filter -- mixing two different types will not be useful. Also, it's a good idea to install a shut off valve before AND after (whether installing one or two units). It just makes it easier if you need to replace a unit down the road. You have the choice of the GE GXWH04F (no bypass on unit and opaque housing for about $20 each) or using the GE GXWH20S units (bypass on unit and clear housing for about $35 each). I installed the 20-year-ago equivalent of the latter (clear housing with bypass) but if installing two in parallel with shutoff valves before and after, then the opaque units will be just fine. When I decided on the clear housing units I thought it would be an advantage to see the filters as they load-up, but the filter cartridges typically change color in a matter of days so there's really no need to see the filter -- like I said you'll know when to change them when you start to experience a noticeable pressure drop and GE's manual even tells you that's how you know when to change the filter because the timer might not (and probably won't) map to your usage. You can just ignore the gimmick 'timer' and having to replace batteries -- it's just a waste of money and serves no real purpose. Once you find how often yours need to be changed you can just put a note on your calendar rather than waste batteries on a fixed timer (a silly feature probably at the behest of the lawyers -lol). My units from 20 years ago didn't have that and I've never wanted for something to notify me -- like I said, it will be obvious when to change them. Oh, one further note -- when you change filters and have turned the water valve back on, be sure to 'burp' the red button-valve. Place a towel or rag over/around the unit and quickly 'burp' air out -- some water should flow out too, if not, do it again. This not only makes sure the filters operate at their full capacity (no air pocket in the canister) but it also cleans the seat on the 'burp' valve to flush any debris our so it will not leak (I wonder if those complaining of that valve leaking after changing filters have done this). Anyhow, if you follow GE's use and care instructions these units should last indefinitely -- mine are now 20 years old and still doing their job as if they are new. Good luck!

Can this filter be mounted horizontally

Asked by: Bud
That should work, it seals tight to handle the water pressure so it won't leak. Just make sure to have enough room to change your filter.

Customer Reviews

Whole House Water Filtration System is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 144.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filter for the price I saw the earlier review about leaking. Can't say what happened to the other one (perhaps some sediment wedged in the pressure relief valve?) but I can say that I am very happy with my two units. Run time is over three years with no issues. My water has a significant amount of sand and fine particles (300 foot well, sandy soil) so this was a major issue as it clogged both the dish and clothes washers when we first moved in. To take care of the sediment problem, I installed two of these filters in parallel (less flow restriction) on the pipe after a lever valve just after the expansion-pressure tank. There is another lever valve on the output of the filters so when I need to change the cartridges, I simply close both valves, hit the pressure relief button, change the cartridges, open the valves, run water in a sink until the cartridge (white) powder is washed out then I am set for another 90 days. The included LED based reminders work very well, batteries are still going strong after three years. Works great, never a leak, easy to change. Good luck!

I originally installed one filter in conjunction with a GE water softener. Due to the hard water in my area, I decided to install 2 additional ones with a 50 micron, a 10 micron and charcoal filter in succession. To save the hassle of welding I used SharkBite fittings with PEX piping and clamps to fasten everything together. Could tell the difference in the water right away. There is one hassle, in my opinion, with the filter casing in that the pressure relief valve (red button on top) spills water all over the wall. One must depress it to depressurize the housing before changing a filter. Strongly recommend adding a faucet to make it easier to relieve the pressure and ball-style shutoff valves at input and output to help speed up the changing process. Also, do not forget to use plenty of Teflon tape with your fittings. Teflon is your friend and will act as an O-ring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great whole house filtering system This is actually a great unit for the cost. I did lots of study and research and found that I didn't need to spend more money on a similar unit from another manufacturer. Regarding some of the positive reviews on this simple unit. They seem to be more of an issue with non experienced installers. for instance. You can't sweat copper fittings while threaded into in input or outputs of this PLASTIC unit. It will melt. Regarding a leaking relief valve. Just blowing out some debris from packaging or shipping will do the trick. Bottom line is, this is a great bang for the buck. Mine has been installed for a month and I don't expect it to do any more or less than what it was designed for. I purchased the charcoal filters that you can buy at Home Depot and that filter has made a great improvement in our water quality! Great product G.E.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, solid, simple but beware of cartridges you buy Had one for 2 years now, no problems, just got another Jan 2013 for drinking water. No valves, no bypass which is what I wanted, valves always gum up and stick so I put my own ball valves before and after this filter. Includes a bracket but MAKE SURE you put the fittings on the housing with brackets or have to unscrew them. WARNING: for whole house use, put TWO filters in parallel for good flow. WARNING: cartridge FXUTC is for drinking water use only because it only lets 1 gallon a minute go thru it (has a tiny orifice hole by design so water flows slow and has time to react with carbon filter stuff). Filter FXUTC filters out 0.5-1 micron which is good. For whole house filter, use string or fiber filters BUT they will not remove chlorine well since flow is too fast.
