Q:We have a rock retaining wall that rodents are digging into, would this be a good solution to fill in those holes and keep the critters out?
by|Jul 31, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello JimB - Yes and no, the Great Stuff™ Pestblock Insulating Foam Sealant is not intended to stop rodents, but rather insects. It can be made more effective against rodents by adding a layer of metal mesh or steel wool in between layers of the foam. When you use any of the Great Stuff™ Insulating Foam Sealant product outside, they need to be painted to protect them from the UV in sunlight, as they are not UV stable. If you follow these steps, you'll have the best chance at success.

Q:Can I use this inside the house? My mantel doesn't fit flush with the wall, the guy who installed it broke off some of bricks, so it's an opening through the wall. I want to put it between the wall and the mantel. I'm concerned about fumes.

A:  If you get this again, buy some Disposable polyethylene gloves. You can get around a 100 for a buck or two. They are also good for small painting or staining jobs. If you need something more sturdy, disposable nitrile gloves a great but cost more.

              Not effective for carpenter bees
I do like the fact that it is easily reusable to a point. I did have to discard a can that was still heavy but would no longer spray. The product once dried is easy to trim and clean up. Do not attempt to clean up or get on your skin when wet. Unfortunately carpenter bees eat through this easily infact it’s almost a treat for them lol. I get it bees are important for our flowers but I can’t afford to build a new home. Pl

Hello Halo - Thank you for sharing your concerns with us regarding Great Stuff™ Insulating Foam Sealant products. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. You could try using the following method:
              1. Fill the gap with Great Stuff™ Pestblock
              2. Apply a small screen or steel wool over the uncured Great Stuff™ Pestblock
              3. Once first layer is cured, apply another layer of Great Stuff™ Pestblock DOW
                mice ate right through
I had high expectations and the application was simple. Unfortunately it only took 2 days for a mouse to chew a hole through this foam.

Hi Pablo, please see the follow recommendations for your next GREAT STUFF™ application for a better experience: Fill openings approximately 50% full; the foam will expand to fill the space. GREAT STUFF™ Insulating Foam Sealant will seal itself shut if left sitting after use. Inserting a pipe cleaner sprayed with oil lubricant or a nail coated in petroleum jelly into the applicator straw may prolong the life of the product up to 30 days, however, it's better to plan ahead, identify and list all possible applications before using the can. You will need to cut off the yellow tip of the Quick Stop Straw to place the pipe cleaner or nail into the straw. Cured foam (wait at least 8 hours) can be trimmed, shaped, sanded, painted or stained. To trim, use a sharp knife or serrated blade.

Doesn't work as advertised as Rodents chew right threw it. They make quite a mess of it as if they actually enjoy chewing on it. Would not recommend for anything other then just as an overpriced foam sealant.

I have been using this product over the past 6 months as we have been involved in renovating a garage into an office and a storage area. The features that I like include: coverage; short curing time so that we can continue on working without a long delay; ability to remove cured spots that are in incorrect areas fairly easily and it cleans up from floor and walls well. It has worked extremely well for us to date and keeps out rain as well as insects - it works well behind the insulation we are using in this remodeled space. Items that I do not like as well: - foam sticks to skin and clothing (if not wearing gloves or area is uncovered) - In the case of my sibling who is helping and has very sensitive skin, the skin actually peeled off when she got some of it on her skin when I handed her a cloth to throw away - and it takes several days or longer to remove from skin and does not come off clothing at all even when washed immediately with soap and water as recommended. (NOTE: I do wear gloves most of time when using the item.) - The newer cans I recently purchased have a new spout design which does not seem to work better - foam comes out bottom of spigot and is no more easily controlled for extra spray - I need to keep wiping off spout area and throwing away the cloth so that it is not more of a mess Does it meet your expectations? YES - It covers open spaces between studs and other areas so that insects and other pests do not enter the area we are remodeling.

                    Carpenter bees
Maybe it's good for ants or little spiders but not good for carpenter bees. I have some really annoying carpenter bees boring holes into my rake board. I called an exterminator and he wanted $600 to stuff the void with a mesh after spraying. It sounded like too much just to stuff, so I went with this. Not only did it not work but it ruined my siding. Now I have to spend money to have the rake boards replaced as well as some pieces of my siding. $600 doesn't sound too bad now. I guess I can recommend this for other types of pests. Can't if it would work for them. Good luck.

No question, the best stuff to close up holes made by rodents
Worked great, use gloves for sure because this stuff is really sticky. Really happy that the house no longer has rodents!

Obviously mice aren't considered a pest
I put this up behind the rafters in my cabin and the mice have chewed/scratched through 2 feet of the stuff to set up shop. Good insulator only a mild deterrent to rodents.
