Questions & Answers

Do I put metal mesh or steel wool in hole also
ByJun 24, 2026
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Use steel scrunchy pot scrubbers, stuff the hole, place the nozzle into the scrubber and spray to better seal the hole. It's messy - wear disposable gloves. The foam further seals the gap and the steel prevents chewing the foam to reopen the gap.

I'd say a 3/4in gap would be reasonable. I recently used it to fill a pretty large gap on the bottom on my garage doors.

      Answer This Question

Make sure you shake it real well for a minute. Then hold down the trigger for a bit, takes a little to start. Once used for the first time, it only lasts 30 days before the can needs to be tossed!

            Great Stuff?? No... "Garbage Stuff"!
While the expanding polyurethane foam may be fine, the propellant can and applicator made it more than worthless. In fact I spent 60 minutes with scrapers and a bucket of acetone cleaning up the mess caused by a broken dispenser that sprayed everywhere but where it was supposed to spray. Dupont chemical apparently substtitutes bean counters for packaging engineers and decided using delicate, brittle plastic and saving $0.03 was a good move. Their Pro line gun applied construction adhesive is quite good but this consumer price point "Great" Stuff is garbage.

We use this to glue the copper wool in place when doing bee proofing. It works great and when painted with pruning seal afterwards it looks good and lasts a long time. Super Bee Rescue Santa Barbara.

Great stuff, but USE IT QUICK!
So this is some pretty GREAT (pun intended) stuff! I'll just be direct about it though, the main issue with it is that once you open, it'll only be good for 30 days. After that the can will become hard as a rock and useless. I bought some awhile ago to seal a small hole on my Airstream floor and probably only used 1/30th of the can. Then I stored it away for a year or so to only realize when I needed it again that I'd need to buy another. I did just buy another to seal some gaps on my garage door and it was perfect. Expands out nicely and dries enough to pry/cut off within like 15-30 mins. After an hour or so it will really expand a LOT so be ready for that. I found it did a excellent job insulating the corners of my door and will hopefully help keep bugs out too.

I used this Pestblock Insulating Spray Foam around the exterior of my home including vent covers where pests seem to enter. So far, so good.

So far no ants or other insects. The can contained quite a lot, I thought I needed two but one covered all the cracks

                Not Grey Colored
This states it is a Grey colored foam. It is not. It is yellow colored just like any other foam. I bought this, and paid more money, because I needed a grey colored foam. Applied it at it in yellow like every other foam. Terrible

Hi Blars, we apologize that our product didn't meet your expectations. We would be curious to know if you used the material outdoors and if it was gray and then eventually turned yellow, or if it was yellow the whole time? We'd appreciate it if you'd contact us at 866-583-2583. Thank you. DOW

                  Long time user tips
I buy multiple cans and dirty one straw and save the others. You can clean it with acetone successfully. I rarely have a can not work (shake well and invert) the first time. I generally have not had success using the same can later. Blue tape surrounding areas you want to protect and let it dry COMPLETELY as excess is easily cut off like styrofoam, once cured. When in doubt, wait. Wet, it’s a mess. Wear gloves. This is my first try at pest block, so, I can’t speak to that. If rodents are your issue, stuff the hole with coarse steel wool, first, then seal. I also have successfully used this to reinforce an area of drywall. I have also used it in fake plants and for shipping. Only one Great Stuff is waterproof. The rest you must seal if exposed. Your mileage may vary.

                    Garbage stuff!!!!
Absolute garbage for over $10 a can. The flimsy spray nozzle wouldn’t seat into the can’s spray tip and just as much foam came out at the can as it did the end of the tip. Sealed 6” of joint and threw the rest away. I have a whole house of gaps and cracks to seal up and I bought one can for a test run. Guess what I’m not buying for the rest of the house.

"Smart dispenser" breaks instantly, do not buy any foam product with this dispenser
"Smart" dispenser is flimsy trash, was unable to use this product. Picked up one of these cans to fill a gap some wasps had been getting into. Also noticed some flashing slightly separating from stucco, figured this might be a better solution than silicone caulking if it filled the crack and held upside-down more easily. Screwed the dispenser on as instructed - no issues there. Filled the gap the wasps had been getting into. Then started filling a gap under the flashing. As I pulled the nozzle along, I heard a faint click and foam immediately started pouring out of the top of the trigger handle instead of the dispenser nozzle. Some flimsy part had snapped inside the handle, and I could no longer dispense the foam. At all. Tried to fix it, no luck. Tried to wrap the handle to keep it in, wouldn't work. So I'm sitting here with a can of foam that's probably 90% full and I can't use it. This product is literally trash; that's where I'm going to have to put it.
