Use steel scrunchy pot scrubbers, stuff the hole, place the nozzle into the scrubber and spray to better seal the hole. It's messy - wear disposable gloves. The foam further seals the gap and the steel prevents chewing the foam to reopen the gap.
I'd say a 3/4in gap would be reasonable. I recently used it to fill a pretty large gap on the bottom on my garage doors.
Make sure you shake it real well for a minute. Then hold down the trigger for a bit, takes a little to start. Once used for the first time, it only lasts 30 days before the can needs to be tossed!
