About This Product

Garden State Bulb Mary Washington Asparagus bare root crowns come directly from our farms and growers in the US. They can be grown into a hardy vegetable and are fairly easy to grow in a variety of climates. Mary Washington is the traditional variety which consists of both male and female stalks. It is resistant to rust fungi, which can harm other varieties of Asparagus. It's important to note that an asparagus bed won't hit full maturity for about 2-3 years. But once that happens, it's worth the wait, as they will produce an abundant crop of spears spring after spring for the next 20 to 30 years.

  • Bulb size: 1-year
  • Maturity height : 24 in. to 36 in. tall
  • Light requirements: full sun
  • You can expect to see a handful of spears the first growing season and a greater yield the 2nd growing season, with plants typically reaching full production in 1 to 3-years
  • Easy to grow, edible, Non-GMO, disease resistant, cold hardy, heat tolerant
  • Low in calories and a great source of nutrients including fiber, folates and vitamins A, C and K
  • * HARVESTING: Do not harvest the first year and only a light harvest may be taken the second season. By the third season, harvest asparagus spears with tight tips by snapping the 7-9" stalks off at the ground. Limit harvest to a period of 6-8 weeks in late spring to early summer or until spears are pencil thin.
  • 1. Plant asparagus in the spring after the ground has thawed and there is no longer danger of frost.2. Choose a location with well-drained soil that receives full sun. Loosen soil prior to planting.3. Dig a trench 5-6" deep. Place the roots in the trench, spreading the roots so they remain flat. Space 12-14" apart.4. Cover with 3" of dirt. Over a period of several weeks continue to add soil as the plants begin to grow until the trench is full. Keep soil moist during periods of dry weather but do not overwater.
  • Mary washington is a perennial vegetable that produces a heavy yield of uniform asparagus spears

      First to emerge
First time asparagus grower here. I planted 40 crowns, 10 each of 4 different varieties. Mary Washington was the first to emerge, and all 10 plants sprouted. This variety is noticeably shorter and frillier than the other 3. Not yet sure what that will translate to in 2 years when they are harvestable. 4 of the plants came up with multiple fronds immediately, and 6 are female (I know that last is random chance). They are also a VERY lush/bright green!

The starts didn't grow. After waiting three weeks (and watering with my other veggies, which are growing), I dug them up. There was no change to their original condition.

None of the plants are growing.
After planting the starts, nothing has happened. I've watered and waited for the sprouts to poke up through the surface so I could add more soil, but after almost three weeks, nothing happened. I dug one up, and it looks exactly like it did when I planted it.
