Can I use this to fill shallow depressions on a flat roof and then apply roll roofing on top of it? If so, how long should I wait before doing roll roofing?
Asked by: DIYerinSeattle
Maybe. First, make sure you will not be creating an evaporation pool and that water will be able to run off your roof. If you have an evaporation pool one solution is to install a roof drain. This is an inexpensive gadget made by local sheet metal companies to drain roof pools where structural "creep" has made the flat roof concave. It is permanent and takes a little drywall tear out and ceiling patch to install. It looks like an inverted roof flashing vent pipe jack with a zero pitch to it. This drain changes from metal to PVC after it passes through your roof. It is two inches diameter and has a PVC elbow that connects it to a two inch PVC pipe. This PVC pipe then parellels through your roofs joists and out the eave. This drain has flanges just like metal vent pipe roof jacks. It needs to be nailed down and covered with roll roofing felt material in about a two foot diameter along with this this roof tar around the edge of the circle under and over the circular lap (nothing protrudes up from this drain - it is flat and inverted on your roof). Use blocks and plumbers metal tape to support the PVC pipe as it runs in between your roof joists and remember to re-insulate the shaft before re drywalling your ceiling. This is the cheapest way to solve this problem. The alternative is to completely tear off your roof. Call a remodeling carpenter or a roofer if you do not have remodeling skills. Show him this solution. He should be able to handle this repair.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I googled a bit and found yes silicone coating is great! Can I use this tar to fill the pond first and then apply silicone coating?
