In order to properly utilize a Generac home standby generator, you must have an automatic transfer switch connected to the system and it must be installed according to code. If you are unsure about proper installation, you can contact a dealer through your local Home Depot.
The 12 volts is to keep the generator battery charged. There should be about 5 or 6 control wires that need to be ran between the transfer switch and the generator. You will have 2 voltage sensing wires plus a neutral. one 12 volt, one transfer signaling wire and your ground wire.
This model is not service rated so a separate disconnect will be needed.
