Out of the 50 plugs, I found 8 that actually fit a 3/8 inch hole drilled with a 3/8 inch forstner bit. All of the others are over sized. I bought these to finish a project made with oak. I had some left over(from a different manufacturer, made in the USA) from a previous project. 99% fit the hole tightly.
Very disappointed with this product which is made in CHINA.

My Experience With These Plugs Are Mostly Positive
I was finishing a project that required more plugs then I had on hand so looked on the HD website to see if they carried them. I was initially taken aback by the two negative reviews but decided to try the plugs anyway since I was going by HD. My experience is as follows and is based on a comparison between older plugs that I had on hand and the HD plugs:
- The positive: 1) All plugs are nicely machined and smooth. My older plugs were rough and usually needed some sanding, 2) Out of 30 plugs, only 1 was loose in the hole but glue held it in place so no problem, 3) I thought the price was right for 50 plugs and 4) all the plugs stained nicely and once glued in place, no further finishing was required.
- The negative: 1) I found that the size between plugs varied; some of the larger plugs were harder to install into my 3/8" countersunk holes then others and I found myself using a wood clamp to press the "slightly" larger plugs into place. The older plugs that I had on hand also varied in size but not as much. This is probably due to humidity and the moisture content of any wood product that cause shrink/swell issues. I took one star off for this which may or may not be fair to the company as moisture content that causes slight changes to the product once they leave the manufacturer is not necessarily they're fault. Bottom-line: all the plugs fit and are a nice accent to my project.
These did measure out slightly less than 3/8" & my countersink does drill slightly larger than 3/8" so the end result is a Button Plug that will need some glue to secure in the hole. My main reason for choosing these was to fill a hole, over a recessed screw, that may need to be removed. My solution was to apply a small dab of hot-melt glue to keep the plug secure, yet allow me to remove later if necessary. The quality of the item is good, just be advised that adhesive may be necessary to retain securely in your finished project.
