Easy to engrave keys, and also works on ceramic & wood. I would never have imagined that 2 AA batteries would power a tool capable of engraving in brass keys, but this does it easily! The bit is changeable: it’s a 3/32 engraver bit (ball) available in the rotary tool area of Home Depot, not that you’ll have to buy new bits anytime soon. An Allen wrench is included with this General engraver. The light weight and high power make this easy to control for quality results. I remember an engraver my parents used (40 years ago) with a cord and it was not only heavy, but vibrated a lot, too. This is more like drawing with a permanent marker - see the video for the noise level (low) and the results. The bit is hardened steel, so it should work fine on brass, aluminum and ceramic. If you try to engrave tool steel or hardened material, you may need a diamond-point bit: 1/8” shaft diameter. This precision engraver is definitely part of my home tool box!

The General Tools Cordless Precision Engraver is perfect for delicate engraving requirements. The engraving tip has a diamond tip the size of the head of pin. The engraver is only 6 inches long. For my first engraving task I engraved the pattern name on the bottom of a bowl. The engraving was so light that I had to use a pencil lead to show the engraving in a picture. If you apply to much pressure the engraving tool will stall. With a little practice you can engrave on a surface like you were writing on a pad of paper. This engraver is not meant to complete with a 110 volt engraver you plug into the wall. This engraver is meant for delicate personal items like jewelry, watches and glassware. It will work on metal but the diamond doesn’t make a deep pattern. I like this special engraver and will keep it the tool box for the delicate items it is designed to work on.

Engravers are a great way to identify important possessions (tools, electronics, etc.). This engraver is at a good price point and for the average user I think it is a good fit. It fits fairly well in the hand and is comfortable to use. I dislike the power switch which must be held down to keep the bit spinning. I would prefer a button that is press once for on and then press again for off. I also had trouble with the bit cutting into metal of tools. In one test I tried to engrave initials into a wrench. The bit would not cut deeply enough and the engraving is not visible from all angles. I also found it hard to control on the metal with it jumping around and not wanting to maintain a straight line. Since I do not have a comparison tool from another manufacturer, this may be the way all engravers work.

This General Tools engraver (Model #505, Made in China) is a rotary engraver, not a stroking engraver. It uses a round, diamond tipped bit that rotates at 20,000 RPM. My unit operates erratically. I needed to re-insert batteries and screw down just right on the battery cap to get the unit to operate. Sometimes the bit spins at full speed, often not. The switch also doesn't always work, but playing with it gets the bit spinning. The instructions state to “use supplied Allen wrench” to loosen/replace the tip, but none was found in the package. Standard, no-name AAA batteries are included and they work fine. The small motor slows as soon as the bit touches the material, and the spinning tip tends to “pull” and wander, but with gentle pressure, slow movement, and firm control it's possible to make reasonably accurate marks. I found holding in one hand and guiding with the thumb of my other hand produced the best results. Hard materials were actually easier to engrave than soft, as materials like plastic and wood grabbed the bit and/or melted, leaving uneven marks and leftover ridges. The bit leaves a fairly wide mark though, more like a wide-tip marker than a fine point. I prefer the stroking engravers for better control and finer markings, and the erratic nature of this unit means I can't really recommend it.

It has a diamond-tip bit and can engrave wood, glass, plastic and stone. My primary use for this is marking tools with my name. You hold it like a pen and unlike my Dremel, it offers a lot of control for precision engraving. It spins fast and there is little vibration so the engraving is fairly delicate. In metal, it does not engrave deep but enough to mark your name. The 3/32" bit is removable with the allen wrench provided. It takes two AAA batteries which are provided as well. Of note: Dremel bits will not fit in this engraver. Made in China.

It runs off two triple a batteries, so the motor isn't particularly strong and it won't engrave very deep into metal, but it gets the job done. So far I've used it to engrave sizes on some wrenches that just have it painted on there. A dremmel would probably engrave a little deeper, but is much more cumbersome; this one you can hold like a pen. It's nice that the batteries are include, but it would be nicer if it was rechargeable through USB like so many things are these day. For $13, not a bad deal, though

The ergonomic "Tri-Lobal" grip allows your hand to easily grip the device and aids in stabilization while engraving. The precision diamond tip bit will engrave on metal, plastic, ceramic, and glass. I also tried it on wood and it worked well. The engraver comes with two "AAA" batteries that power the motor to 20,000 RPM. An Allen wrench comes in the packaging to allow you to quickly change out the bit when needed. See attached photographs. Well done General Tools & Instruments!

I have been using a plain stylus for marking my tools as an aid to recovery if they were ever stolen, but using this precision engraver is much faster and the results more legible and elegant. I expect the elegance will even improve with practice. I have also used it for layout marking. Again it does a much better job than with my stylus. After some practice, the layout lines are both clear and uniform. The packaging even included two batteries.
