This thermometer helps eliminate the guesswork in testing and maintaining the correct temperature of your soil and compost pile. The long, thin stem makes it easy to sink down into the middle of the pile or planting bed. The dial is easy to read and the stem is easy to clean. Also works for my compost tumbler which I need to check often to make certain it is "cooking" properly. A must for anyone who composts.

General Tools Soil and Compost Thermometer
With the ongoing extreme heat, current dry conditions and noticeably poor growing of this years garden tomato plants, I have been checking soil temperatures with my newly acquired 'General Tools Soil and Compost Thermometer'
I have been taking readings and have tried to regulate soil temperature by early morning waterings in hopes to restore my plants.
Having very little knowledge of its' usefulness, I did some internet research concerning this and found the following:
Used for determining current soil temperatures.
Check the temperature of the soil during the growing season and try to keep the soil temperature at around 45° to 70°F (7°-21°C) for successful plant growth. I can seem to cool down the temperature readings by regulating AM watering.
When taking a reading, it is important to be consistent and take the probes readings at the same place.
Best time to record is to check in the early morning temperatures for a good average.

Every gardener needs one.
Where else can you find one this size? They should carry it in the store,because once you know soil temps you can tell whether you need more compost and manure to cool the roots.

Well Built, seems accurate, using it for compost and soil temperature
I am using this for a Johnson - Su compost bioreactor and for soil temperature. It has kept its accuracy and is strong enough and long enough to read everything that I want to read.
