            Answer This Question

A:  Hi Tom, we recommend push the stem into the ground for 2.5 inches at least and wait for about 5 minutes for a stabilized reading. Hope this helps.

A:  I push the stem into the ground until it hits the dial. I leave it in the ground until the hand of the dial gives me a reading. This should happen immediately.

A:  I bought this thermometer to use in my compost bins. I push it in only 3-6 inches and leave it for about 5 minutes. I have not used it to check soil temperatures.

                  A:  i go 6-8 inches

A:  Soil readings for seeds are done in 1 to 2 inches of soil. Sample at least 4 to 6 inches deep for transplants. This thermometer helps eliminate the guesswork in testing and maintaining the correct temperature of your soil and compost pile. The long, thin stem makes it easy to sink down into the middle of the pile or planting bed. The dial is easy to read and the stem is easy to clean. Also works for my compost tumbler which I need to check often to make certain it is "cooking" properly. A must for anyone who composts.

General Tools Soil and Compost Thermometer With the ongoing extreme heat, current dry conditions and noticeably poor growing of this years garden tomato plants, I have been checking soil temperatures with my newly acquired 'General Tools Soil and Compost Thermometer' I have been taking readings and have tried to regulate soil temperature by early morning waterings in hopes to restore my plants. Having very little knowledge of its' usefulness, I did some internet research concerning this and found the following: Used for determining current soil temperatures. Check the temperature of the soil during the growing season and try to keep the soil temperature at around 45° to 70°F (7°-21°C) for successful plant growth. I can seem to cool down the temperature readings by regulating AM watering. When taking a reading, it is important to be consistent and take the probes readings at the same place. Best time to record is to check in the early morning temperatures for a good average. Item Is said to: Accurately measure soil or compost temperature from 0 to 200° F Easy to read dial and rugged 20" stainless-steel stem Soil Temperature Measuring instruments for both a compost pile and planting soil temperatures. Not having the expertise or experience with this garden tool the above comments are my observations.

                        Every gardener needs one.
Where else can you find one this size? They should carry it in the store, because once you know soil temps you can tell whether you need more compost and manure to cool the roots.

This soil thermometer works great. It gives me the correct temp of my soil so I can tell when it’s the correct time to fertilize in the spring. Easy to read dial and long stem which is easily pushed into the ground.
