Product Overview

Many older models of garage door opener are still in use but have weak remote range or interference due to nearby radio frequencies. This Universal Garage Door Opener Remote Upgrade Kit will give your remote a much better signal and upgrade you to the modern Intellicode technology. If you have a garage door opener that operates on frequencies of 380-400 MHz and you live within 50 miles of a military base, airport or other government facility your garage door opener could be affected. In this case, the Genie GIRUD-1T Universal Conversion Kit can help. It works on auto-seek dual frequency technology that will automatically seek either the 315 or 390 MHz frequency produced by a remote, helping to ensure the opener will respond regardless of nearby frequency interference. This kit adds Intellicode security technology – which automatically changes the access code on each use to your older opener, helping to prevent unauthorized access to your garage. The GIRUD-1T kit comes with everything you’ll need for an easy installation and setup. Installation instructions guide you through the assembly process for the universal dual frequency receiver, plug-in 12v transformer and G3T-R remote control transmitter. The kit includes wire and wire clips as well as mounting screws. Rest easy knowing your property is safe and secure with the Genie GIRUD-1T Universal Garage Door Opener Remote Upgrade Kit for your garage door opener.

You can use it either way. You can replace the existing wall console with this, or you can keep it and have both.

No, this is in additional to the original receiver. Some garage door openers may have an option to disable the receiver but that is not part of this unit. In my situation both the original and the new remotes were used. The new unit was added because the older unit was not supported by the builtin transmitter in a new car. Other people in the family and other cars still work using the older unit.

When it says “works with most garages door openers” does that include the LiftMaster 41A3625?

It could be one of two things. The receiver is receiving signals from another source like radio interference or a neighbors opener. The receiver is failing, needs to be replaced. A lot of openers have a code you can set, typically 8 switches. If this is the type you have then I would suggest try changing the code. If you are going to do this then you also need to change the code in the remotes to match. The simplest way it to pick one switch and flip it, on both the remote and the opener. You may want to verify the location and function of the switches as some openers may use one or two of these switches to enable some optional function. Most newer openers use a different system where the code is not fixed but 'learned' by pairing the remotes. In this case I'm not sure of a solution.

Most garage door openers have the terminals to connect a remote button. This is where you would add this unit. It may be under a cover, you may need to look up the unit on the internet to verify. I have nerve seen an opener that did not have these terminals, but that does not say that there aren't some that don't.

Will this work with a Chamberlain / Liftmaster 2220?

The Genie upgrade kit works by emulating the in-the-garage pushbutton on the wall, but only if it is a two-wire single-button (doorbell-type) push. If that's your Liftmaster, yes. If not, or if your inside control has more than one button or more than two wires, probably not.

Shipping was quick. Order it on Wednesday and by Monday it was delivered. Instructions were a bit confusing so I had to call Genie support since my garage door opener is a model 200, and connectors looked different than on paper instructions. Basically since I already had a push button installed on the wall all I had to do was route the connectors from the receiver to the same wire connections. Then just wired the receiver and power supply as per the instructions.

I tried this garage door remote adapter because I couldn't buy replacements for the required remote. I was doubtful about this upgrade kit, but was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to install and how well it works so far. I can control the garage door with the new remote from at least a half block away. My garage door opener is an older Genie that uses intellicode. That doesn't really matter as this upgrade kit connects to the button control either at the button or at the point where the wires connect to the opener. In fact, I can operate the garage door with my one remaining original remote as well as with the new remote for the conversion kit.
