does pedistal need to be secured to concrete

Asked by: kiki
Yes, I had my contractor dig and install a "lower" foundation of 2 x 2 foot with 3 rebars set upright with about 3 inches in the clear. Then I had them make a wooden frame 12 by 18 and on top of the lower foundation with the "J" hooks set. Both pourings were set for 48 hours in between pourings before attaching the mail box

Customer Reviews

Pedestal Post-Mount Mailbox in White is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mediocre Design Simple design. This pedestal mailbox is held together by one small diameter threaded bolt running through the center, results...not very secure. It is light weight, tends to move a bit if gently pushed[high winds?]. It is top heavy. Being out in the elements, this mail box should come with stainless hardware. These must be purchased separately. Other reviews mention no outgoing mail holder. I place the mail inside the pull open door and close it for there is no other place to put it. Key mechanism seems flimsy and cheap...to have duplicate keys made is impossible. I tried several locksmiths in town and no one has the correct blank. This mail box will serve its purpose for awhile, but I have doubts it will hold up well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tip on Creating the Cement Pad The other reviews helped me make the right decision to get this mailbox by Solar Group. We're very pleased. Here's a tip on creating the cement pad. The mailbox base is 13 1/2" x 10" so I made a frame box of 3" board, 16" x 14". The hole was only about 4-5" deep and a 1/2 CU FT bag of cement was perfect. I put the base on the pad while it was still wet and it molded to the base. I lifted the base off when the pour was still damp (bolts could still move so I was careful). Here's another tip, go to the Solar Group web site and download the install instructions to get comfortable with the project you're getting into. Good luck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nice design....Poor manufacture quality I have owned two of these boxes. The first mailbox powder coating peeled off in three months. Home Depot and the manufacturer promptly replaced the product. I have had the replacement fror three years and the powder coat has peeled off and the locking door hinge pin has broken. I solved the water leak issue with a bead of caulk on the inside. Nice design, poor manufacture...too bad. Home Depot should drop this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent pedestal mailbox I loved the pedestal mailbox the minute i saw it advertised online, but when i receive it home it revealed to be even much nicer than in the picture..it's very elegant, roomy and sturdy. My neighbors started noticing it in my front yard and have already asked me where i purchased it and how much i paid for it .. The shipping was fast ,free of charge and easy; it left my friends and neighbors pleasantly surprised . i definitely recommend this pedestal mailbox to anyone, specially because of its beauty and the price value combined..unbelievable!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor manufacturing Visually, the mailbox looks good but it's the worst mailbox ever. It's been a year since I purchased it and the black paint is peeling off like crispy potatoe chip sizes exposing a powdery black/white/gray metal matte finish. The entire mailbox is made of fairly strong aluminum BUT the base that binds it to the ground is made of FLIMSY PLASTIC! The worst over priced piece of garbage I've ever invested in. The mailbox broke off the base and is now laying in my driveway. It wasn't even anything near 5 mile winds and it was blown to the ground.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good, used different hardware. Nice looking, didn't get this for security. Could be a little sturdier. I didn't use the hardware that came with it.. poured a pad with 1/2 concrete anchor bolts. Made a pattern from the base. The through rod, is a single rod. Should be either 4 long bolts, or larger bolt(s). Cure for the top heaviness... fill the post with sand mix. Can be done with post assembles and box not bolted on yet. I also used silicone caulking along with the screws for the top cap, prevent leaks. All in all, I paid about $200 for total and I like the way it came out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor design We had this mail box for two months and the whole time it wobbled. we had to return it since it developed a stress crack. Don't be fooled by the good looks save yourself the trouble and buy a different mail box.

While the mail box is serviceable, it arrived with the lower front panel cracked. I kept it because we are house bound and needed a box next to the front door. Rather than disrupting mail service, we chose not to return it.
