Yes you will need a posthole digger
If you put cement in the planter it would likely work.
With the right tools and enough cussing, you should be able to do it.
Not sure why they say use only with smaller boxes. It has adjustable hardware to fit a couple of different sizes. I even used it with what Gibraltar size D; just had to drill additional holes in the side of the box. It has been in place for six months and is doing fine.
We contacted the manufacturer and they were nice enough to send us a cap for free. We had a solar light that matched and fit perfectly behind the box on the post by attaching it to the cap.
It was supposed to but it didn't! None of the holes lined up properly and New ones finally needed to be drilled. We made it work, but it definitely was not the easy installation they promised!
Yes, I purchased the kit and mailbox, my postman was a happy person, he did not have to get out and ring doorbell with he had bigger packages do to all the room mail has.
The post comes in two pieces. Each are 2-1/4 inches square. The bottom piece is about 26 inches from the pointed end to where the top post sits when attached to the bottom. The top piece is 30-3/4 inches long.
