Questions & Answers

Is this adhesive or static cling I'm looking for something that could be easily removed

Asked by: bjr23
Keep looking, This can be taken off, but it is not intended to be taken off, and could not be reused it is taken off. In fact, you have to be very careful putting it on, as it likes to stick to itself so well, that you can easily end up with a wad of expensive trash.

Can this be applied to plexiglass?

Can this be applied to plexiglass?
Asked by: ThosC
• Do not apply residential GILA films with adhesives to plastic, Plexiglas, polycarbonate surfaces, or motor vehicle windows. On plastic surfaces, the adhesive on the film may cause bubbling or blistering and long darts that have the appearance of wrinkles. This is caused by incompatible chemistries and the greater expansion and contraction of the plastic surfaces that have film applied to them and as they are warmed by the sun. Furthermore, attempting to remove film from plastic surfaces may result in permanent damage to such plastic windows. Residual adhesive may prove difficult to remove from plastic without physically or chemically damaging it. You may, however install adhesive-free vinyl Glare Control or Privacy Black films on such windows, carefully following instructions and never trimming such films directly on the plastic window.

Is this safe for my windows if i apply one film to the outside of my windows and another film to the inside?
Asked by: Al
I applied this film to my sliding glass doors last year and have no problems with it. I did manage to adhere the film to the glass backwards (leave it to me to succeed in doing this) and it clung to the window just fine. I would recommend that 2 people apply the film, one to keep the film straight and the other to adhere to window.

At night, will it prevent people from seeing inside?
Asked by: Susie
At night, no it will not be of much help unless you turn off the lights. But if you don't have any lights on, they won't be able to see much anyway. During the day time it will help more, but if you have lights on or are back lighted, they will still be able to see in.

Customer Reviews

36 in. x 180 in. Heat Control Light Window Film is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 130.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gila Light Tint The outside world looks clearer and more vibrant while reflecting heat, & not cutting out too much light. Improved the colors of the sky and landscape. Also adds privacy, since there is a slight exterior mirror finish to reflect the clouds and blue sky. I like to have open drapes in the daytime to let the sunshine in to fill my home, but do not want neighbors to easily see inside my home. I live in a climate zone that has the heat of the Sun 90% of the year, along with mild winters. This is perfect for my unshaded side of the house. I will suggest this product to all my friends who like cooler interiors without relying on their air conditioner as much. This $30 purchase will see a return-on-investment in no time. I wish I installed the product long ago. Gila won't say this for liability reasons, but I will... This product also adds extra security in the unlikely event a window is cracked or shattered from the boogie man or golf ball.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be patient and you will be rewarded! I had read other reviews on this product and was a little worried. Many either hated it because they couldn't install it and others who loved it said be patient...be very patient. This film is not hard to install, it is just tedious. You have to measure the window, measure the film, cut the film....then spray, spray, spray!!!! Make sure you have several bottles of the spray - you are going to need it! Also, make sure you have a sharp blade to cut the film with. My husband and I put the film on only three of the eight windows in our bedroom (it is always SOOOO HOT) and it was cool, if not cooler than other rooms in the house where we had not installed the film. We will be doing two more of the windows and I'm sure it will work even better! This is good stuff and can do what its supposed to...just take it slow, watch the online videos, and enjoy it after you're done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a good product and would use it again. After reviewing the specs for the various Gila window films on the Gila website, I purchased the "light" window as it allows the most visible light through and I didn't want the windows to be too dark. The film application was straight forward with two people. The Gila video on Youtube is quite good. I purchased the application kit which was worthwhile. I ran out of the application spray and made my own (per the video) using water and baby shampoo and used the spray bottle. Be sure to buy a wide window cleaning razor tool (available at HD) to pre-clean / scrape the windows after wetting them using the solution. I also bought a package of Dickies lint-free reusable / washable wipes which were great for cleaning the windows and wiping them dry after the film application. After the windows cured for a day or two they look great, and the heat transfer reduction is noticeable. After the film has been applied and cured for a few hours, It's helpful to have someone outside to point out the air and water bubbles to squeegee out as they're more noticeable from outside. I would definitely use this window film again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 36 in. x 180 in. Heat Control Light Window Film I purchased this film after reading the reviews I have 6 windows that faces South all day and heats up the one room a lot. I have done this job myself and the first piece was difficult ( it is better if you have 2 or 3 people 1 person holding the film another removing the clear layer and the other spraying while the clear layer is being removed) My windows were not that big 28 X 33 once it is on 80% is done spray the outside of the film and squeegee the solution you sprayed on the film when you removed the clear layer. IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A MIRROR OUTSIDE THE HOUSE, it has a slight tint and it does keep the room cooler. I love it once it is done I was able to do all 6 windows with this roll and have a small piece left to do a small octagon window in the front of the house also

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tricky to install, but well worth it! This is a great product. We used the advice of previous reviewers so that we avoided problems some people have had and were able to install it correctly and carefully the first time! We noticed a drop in the temperature in this south facing room the very moment we held the first piece of film up to the window to install it. AMAZING. If you have a room that is hard to cool and gets a lot of direct sunlight, I highly recommend this product. Take the time to read all reviews and utilize all the advice that the successful reviewers offer. It all really helps. It may not be absolutely perfect at every edge, but we are really happy with the installation and the immediate cooling effect it has had in this room that has always been so hard to cool. I wish we had found this product years ago!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks like a mirror inside your home - bye bye view The tint was darker than I thought it would be for a "light" colored window film but that was ok. We have 5 sliding doors and windows that was the sun all day so we wanted to reduce the heat coming into our home but wanted to keep our view of the lake we live on. So I spent all afternoon installing the product and it was not that hard just takes time and patience. Then night feel and the problem reveled itself. Around sunset as it grew dim we started to notice we could not see outside of the windows. When it got dark you cannot see anything outside! The tint at night has a mirrored surface that faces inward. Bye bye view. So we tore it all down that night. If you are ok with the inside of your mirror turning into a mirror and not being able to see outside in the evenings then the product is fine but if you have any view at all at night it will be gone.

I stood in front of 2 side by side windows that I have. One had the film the other didn't. They both had equal sunlight and I could tell the difference. The only drawback is that it can be a pain to install. Especially, for just one person. My only concerns are: Winter and having the film on the windows long term. Where I live, usually June through mid September are hot. In winter we go below freezing from November through March. So, I may want to consider taking the film off to get the UV light and help my heating bill. Gila sells the stuff to do that with of course. However, if I don't want to take it off in the winter. How will the film hold up in the cold? Finally, with regards to long term. How hard will it be to get the film off of the windows in say 3 years? Especially after our hot summers and cold winters. It might be easy, but, my experience with automobile tinting is that it can be a nightmare. Only time will tell.

The Gila Window Filmreally cuts down on the glare and heat. There is minimal color distortion. The only problem I hadin installing it was reading the white-on-white word "Spray" on the Application Solution bottle.
