The outside edge of the tube extends 3 1/8" from the wall. The tube itself is 1.5" in dia. So you have 1 5/8" clearance between the inside edge of the tube and the wall - more than enough room for your hand.

the bar sticks to the wall of the shower

This particular grab bar is designed to be attached into the wall's substrate. No suction cups (or alternative attachment method) are provided. If you can anchor into the substrate behind the shower wall then you could make the installation work - but be SURE to caulk points where you have penetrated the shower wall so shower water doesn't get behind the wall..

Does this exact style come in 42in?

Asked by dys March 29, 2020

Answer

Yes, but it doesn’t stay stuck to the wall at all. Even after following exact directions we had 3 and they all fell off within a month. And Home Depot wouldn’t take them back.

After a fall down the stairwell, I decided to install these grab bars. What a difference! I think better than a regular hand rail for a senior like myself. Find the studs, drill the holes and screw it down. Even I could do the install.

These grab bars are made of high quality stainless steel and are finished very nicely with polishing and peening. I wish Glacier Bay offered their own secure mounting system for mounting in drywall and tile. I used the Moen SecureMounts (sold separately). I had to drill out the holes in the mounting flanges in order for the holes to align with the SecureMount pattern. Next time I will use Wingits. Overall, the Glacier Bay product is excellent.
