NO!!, No need to drill at all. Its pressure mounted.
Hi Jordan, thank you for asking about the Glacier Bay Rustproof Adjustable Tension Mount Curved Shower Rod! The 7/8-inch diameter tube should be secured into the wall by twisting the end of the tube away from you. In order to ensure the rod assembly is secure, turn the end of the 7/8-inch diameter tube until it’s tight. If you are still experiencing issues, try referring to the "Installation Guide" linked on the right side of the product detail page under “Product Overview” or watch the short video that quickly shows how to install the rod, located on the top left side of the product detail page. You can also contact the manufacturer’s customer service team at email@example.com. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your comments online. Your rod would have to be uninstalled if you were to utilize ring that do not open. For hooks and rings with an opening, you would hook and unhook them as any other Rod would work. Should you have any additional questions, please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-892-3986.

You did not miss a step. They are not very tight after snapped into place. Since the curtain does not touch it, I haven't noticed mine moving. If it bothers you, one drop of super glue on the top where it wouldn't be seen would probably make it more secure.
no it is a pressure mount.
Easy to assemble and install. Overall, well worth it!
The install was very easy and looks greater than expected
Rings can be used with this rod.
I suspect you could, there's a plastic part under the metallic cover that could be drilled for screws.
